Tailgate parties and RVs are a perfect match. Whether you’re planning a tailgating party at a local campground, a stadium close to home, or even one out of town, having the convenience of a home on wheels adds to the enjoyment and the ease of party preparation. To help prepare for your tailgating adventure, check out these tips to ensure you have a fun-filled time:

Essentials

  • An awning or umbrella to protect you from the sun on a nice day, or the rain on a cloudy one.
  • Portable outdoor fan or heater.
  • Folding lawn chairs.
  • Sunglasses, bug repellent, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for the temperature outside
  • A game or two like horseshoes or corn hole, or if there’s a designated play area at the park, campground, or stadium, bring a football or play badminton.
  • Plenty of water and non-sugary beverages on hand to stay hydrated – un-sweetened iced tea and Gatorade are good choices.
  • Plenty of snacks and food! Both are requirements for a successful tailgating party.

Tailgating Food

More on that last point: everyone loves tailgating food and beverage. Keep it simple so there’s time to socialize and enjoy the activities.

  • Set up a table with snacks. Include different varieties of chips, pretzels, fresh veggies, and dips (including salsa and spreads). Keep anything that requires refrigeration on ice.
  • Light up the grill and make it a traditional cookout with hotdogs and burgers. If you have room, throw on a package of wings or a slab of ribs.
  • Purchase premade potato salad and coleslaw from a local deli or make ahead of time. Keep cool until food is ready to serve.
  • Prepare as much ahead of time as possible. Place sliced tomatoes, pickles, sliced onions, and lettuce in separate dishes so guests can dress up their burgers. Have an assortment of sliced cheese on hand to add to your burger.
  • For the dogs, have mustard, ketchup, relish, diced onions, and shredded cheese. Heat a can of hot dog chili and place a container aside.

Road Trip Game Time

Games, Travel Tips

Many people love the social aspects of RVing. For many, games can provide a lot of that social interaction. We thought it would be fun to put together a list of some of the more popular games for those on the road. Here is a list of five games every RVer should have on board.
Board Games

Scrabble

Scrabble is a great game for two or more people and can even be played by teams. The classic game involves building words using tiles drawn at random and then building on other’s words as well. It is fun, challenging, and educational and there always seems to be a word or two played that will draw challenges, or laughs, from the other players. Just be sure to bring a dictionary along to test if the words are real or imaginary.

Yahtzee

Yahtzee is a game played with dice and an official Yahtzee scoring sheets. One of the nice things about Yahtzee is that it doesn’t take much storage space. It is played with five dice. After throwing the initial five dice, a player will have up to two more rolls to create the best “hand” they can. As the game progresses, players will need to fill in the necessary “hands” like a full house, 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, small and large straights, and the elusive “Yahtzee”, meaning five-of-a-kind. The game moves along fast so you don’t need to set aside hours to play.

Monopoly

Unlike Yahtzee above, you better have a good chunk of time to set aside for a game of Monopoly. Players buy properties as they move around the board, and build houses and hotels after collecting sets of properties. As other players land on these developed properties they are forced to pay the owner “rent”. The person left with the most money and property at the end of the game is the winner. Each circuit around the board allows winners to pass “Go” and add $200 to their bank. “Community Chest” and “Chance” cards keep the game interesting while “Jail” puts players in a time-out. Monopoly is for older players but there is a “junior” edition available.

Trivial Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit is a challenging trivia game that requires players to answer questions from a variety of subjects. Players will need to be well versed in several different areas of knowledge in order to succeed, which means that team play can make the game more enjoyable. While the classic trivia game is still lots of fun, the franchise has created a variety of additional games that target a specialty area like Rock ’n’ Roll or a certain decade.

Uno

Uno is a card game played with a special deck of cards with numbers and four different colors. Players sit around a table and follow suit in color or number. A series of special cards may reverse play, skip a player or have the player pick up several cards. If a player cannot follow suit, he must draw for the draw pile of cards until he gets a card that can be played. A player must call “Uno” when he has one card remaining, alerting his fellow players. The player who is first to play all of his cards is the winner. Uno is simple enough to be played by younger players, yet offers enough strategy options to keep older players interested.

Playing games on the road can help you, your family, and your friends bond and build lifelong memories. Tell us what your favorite road-trip games are in the comments or on Facebook!

RV There Yet? 5 Ways To Keep Little Ones Entertained On The Road

No matter what sort of built-in entertainment you have access to in your RV, your kids are going to get bored sooner or later on long trips. Luckily, it’s not so hard to keep the kids entertained and enthused about the trip if you just make a few preparations in advance.

Young Children Entertained

Plan Extra Stops

One of the easiest ways to keep kids from getting bored is to not give them the chance to get bored. Plan some extra stops along the way to each destination so that you’re checking out a fun roadside attraction or stopping for some sight seeing every few hours. You can make the kids a part of the planning stage. This replaces boredom with anticipation and restlessness with excitement.

Keep Sugar to a Minimum

The more sugar your kids are able to get, the more anxious and hyperactive they’re going to be between stops. You may want to stick to natural, low-sugar fruit juices over sodas, and healthy snacks rather than salty, sweet junk food. You may need a load of caffeine and sugar to stay alert while driving, but your children will likely be more easily entertained and less restless without the cola.

Load Up on Activities

A new video game for the Nintendo DS is a great way to keep kids entertained, but it can cost sixty dollars or so and the appeal may wear off. On the other hand, you can pick up dozens of coloring books, comics, sketch books and board games to keep them busy for days on end for about the same price. Don’t rely on one activity to keep the kids entertained for the whole journey, load them up with dozens of fun things to do so that they always have something else to play with when they lose interest in the previous activity.

Give Them a Job to Do

Ideas for jobs could be taking photos for the family album, keeping everyone’s water supply stocked up, looking out for gas stations, or even just switching out CDs on the stereo. Anything that gives your kids a sense of purpose can be a tremendous help.

Night Travel

When all else fails, doing the majority of your traveling at night when the kids are sleepy is a great way to keep them from getting restless, and beat daytime traffic while you’re at it.

Traveling with kids can be a joy, but it can also be a distraction, and a dangerous one at that. It’s hard to stay focused on driving when you’re trying to entertain little ones. Take the time to make sure that they stay entertained on the road, and you’ll have nothing but fond memories of every trip.
