Best-NFL-TailgatingFootball season is just around the corner and to many people that means only one thing: tailgating. There is nothing better than sharing some great food with friends and family before your home team takes the field. Tailgating is also a way to make some new friends.

Below are five of the top tailgating cities in the country. This is by no way a complete list but each of these cities offers something unique as far as food and overall experience. Load up the RV and set your GPS coordinates for each of these stadiums and be prepared for an experience of a lifetime.

Buffalo, NY – Ralph Wilson Stadium

When you think of Buffalo, you think of buffalo wings and the parking lot of Ralph Wilson Stadium is one of the best places in the world to experience them. The stadium also offers ample parking for RVs and busses. Feel free to bring all the creature comforts that will make your tailgating party the envy of your neighbors.

While buffalo wings are the dish of choice, you can also experience some amazing kummelweck and excellent chili.

Miami, FL – Sun Life Stadium

Miami is a great place to catch a football game. First of all, the weather is great. There are only a few places where you can wear shorts in December. Secondly, there are so many transplants from around the country that the food scene in the parking lot is as diverse as the population. The main focus, however, will be Cuban food. Follow your nose to some of the best food outside of Havana.

Sun Life Stadium also offers one of the largest parking lots in the league so there will be room for everyone in your party.

Houston, TX – NRG Stadium

The Houston Texans management has encouraged fans to tailgate and the fans have taken to it like fish to water. Texas-style barbeque is always on the menu but Tex-Mex is very popular in Houston. You can never go wrong with fajitas and enchiladas.  Nowhere else on earth is it done better than in Texas.

They say everything is bigger in Texas and that definitely applies to the NRG Stadium parking lot. There is plenty of room for RVs and busses so you can link up with friends and create your own party area.

Kansas City, MO – Arrowhead Stadium

Kansas City barbeque is possibly the best in the world.  And specifically known for their ribs.  When you mix barbecue with football, you have the makings of a great day. Everything here will be off the charts delicious and Chiefs fans are some of the friendliest in the league.

Kansas City can get extremely cold in November and December so pack accordingly. Arrowhead Stadium is an open roof venue.

Green Bay, WI – Lambeau Field

Watching a game at Lambeau Field is at the top of many sports fans’ bucket list for very good reasons – great football, great food and great people. Tailgating is a city-wide activity with residents gathering in their driveways and front lawns.

The parking lot at Lambeau Field is home to some of the best bratwurst this side of the Atlantic. Everyone is friendly and willing to share so bring your appetite.

Traveling to these stadiums and tailgating will not only allow you to meet some terrific people and eat some great food but you will also see some of the best parts of this country. Stay safe with Coach-Net’s RV Protection Programs.

Tailgate parties and RVs are a perfect match. Whether you’re planning a tailgating party at a local campground, a stadium close to home, or even one out of town, having the convenience of a home on wheels adds to the enjoyment and the ease of party preparation. To help prepare for your tailgating adventure, check out these tips to ensure you have a fun-filled time:

Essentials

  • An awning or umbrella to protect you from the sun on a nice day, or the rain on a cloudy one.
  • Portable outdoor fan or heater.
  • Folding lawn chairs.
  • Sunglasses, bug repellent, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for the temperature outside
  • A game or two like horseshoes or corn hole, or if there’s a designated play area at the park, campground, or stadium, bring a football or play badminton.
  • Plenty of water and non-sugary beverages on hand to stay hydrated – un-sweetened iced tea and Gatorade are good choices.
  • Plenty of snacks and food! Both are requirements for a successful tailgating party.

Tailgating Food

More on that last point: everyone loves tailgating food and beverage. Keep it simple so there’s time to socialize and enjoy the activities.

  • Set up a table with snacks. Include different varieties of chips, pretzels, fresh veggies, and dips (including salsa and spreads). Keep anything that requires refrigeration on ice.
  • Light up the grill and make it a traditional cookout with hotdogs and burgers. If you have room, throw on a package of wings or a slab of ribs.
  • Purchase premade potato salad and coleslaw from a local deli or make ahead of time. Keep cool until food is ready to serve.
  • Prepare as much ahead of time as possible. Place sliced tomatoes, pickles, sliced onions, and lettuce in separate dishes so guests can dress up their burgers. Have an assortment of sliced cheese on hand to add to your burger.
  • For the dogs, have mustard, ketchup, relish, diced onions, and shredded cheese. Heat a can of hot dog chili and place a container aside.

Football Tailgating

By tailgating, we mean a tailgate party not the practice of driving too close to the vehicle in front of you! A tailgate party is a social event held on around the open tailgate of a vehicle. Tailgating originated in the United States and usually occurs in parking lots at stadiums and arenas before and after sporting events and concerts. People who attend such a party are said to be “tailgating” and many participate even though their vehicles do not happen to have tailgates. Part of the tailgating fun includes the food and beverage shared among the party-goers. Here are a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at your next tailgate party.

Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches
An American favorite, this classic will have your mouth-watering. Serves 4.

Onions

  • Add 1 tbsp. of extra-virgin olive oil to a skillet.
  • Add 2 thinly sliced yellow-skinned onions.
  • Add a dash of salt and pepper or a steak seasoning blend
  • Cook approximately 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft with a nice caramel color.

Meat

    • Lightly coat a griddle with 1 tbsp. of the olive oil.
    • Cook/sear 2 thinly sliced pieces of sirloin or beef tenderloin for about 2 minutes on each side.

Cook until brown but not crispy.

  • When browned, sprinkle with a dash of garlic salt and pepper.
  • When all meat pieces are cooked, line up the split rolls.
  • Place 2 slices of provolone cheese on each slice.
  • Take a 1/4 portion each of the onion and meat mixture, place on a griddle and mix.
  • Put mixture on a roll. Place the top roll letting the heat melt the cheese into the meat. Repeat for each sandwich.

Tacos

Create a taco buffet with the help of a pre-packaged box of taco shells and taco seasoning. Serves 6

  • Break 1+ lbs. of meat into pieces and cook over medium to high heat for about 5 to 7 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
  • Drain. Stir in 2/3 cups of water and taco seasoning. Heat to boiling. Reduce and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes uncovered. Stir frequently until mixture thickens.
  • Heat taco shells. (Wrap in foil and place on top rack of grill)
  • Spoon meat mixture into shells.
  • In separate containers/dishes have shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, onions and green peppers, sliced black olives, shredded cheese, sour cream (keep cool) and hot sauce.

Grinders

This is a quick over-the-coals recipe. Ingredients: 1/2 lb. chopped bologna, 1 cup of grated American cheese, 1/3 cup of pickle relish, 6 chopped olives, 3 tbsp. mayonnaise, butter and 6 buns.

    • Butter the buns, inside and out.
    • Combine remaining ingredients.
    • Place mixture inside each bun.
    • Wrap buns individually in aluminum foil.
    • Place on hot coals for approximately 5 minutes on each side.
    • Open carefully and serve.
