RV Cooktop Winter MaintenanceIn the fourth part of this series on RV inspection and maintenance, we will discuss the RV cooktop and focus on slide-in type cooktops with piezo or electronic ignition. Cooktops are arguably the most reliable of RV propane appliances. These articles provide tips on performing annual inspection and simple maintenance only, which should help mitigate unexpected component failures. It is important to have your RV propane system regularly professionally inspected and serviced.

Like other RV appliances, it is important to keep the cooktop clean. In addition to wiping the cooktop surface, be sure to regularly lift the cover and clean the burner box underneath. Some people like to line the box with aluminum foil. This makes the cooktop easy to keep clean, as you can simply replace the foil. However, if you choose to do this, make sure not to allow the foil to come close to any of the ignitor components. Doing so can cause the ignitor to ground against the foil, resulting in ignition problems.

cooktopWhile the cooktop cover is open with the burner box exposed, check the ignitors for proper operation. If you are having problems with your cooktop burners lighting, there are a few simple checks before taking the RV in for service. There are different configurations of piezo and electronic ignition, but they operate in the same way. The piezo ignitor or ignition module generates a spark that travels along the high voltage wire(s) to either the central piezo cluster or each individual burner. In the case of a central cluster, each burner is fed by a flash tube that channels propane from that burner to the central spark for ignition. If you are having ignition issues, first determine if it is affecting all burners or only specific ones. If it’s affecting all burners, check for the presence of a spark. If there is no spark and you have electronic ignition, check for 12V feeding the ignition module. If you don’t have 12V, you will need to trace the voltage loss. Complete loss of spark (and verified 12V for electronic ignition) often points to a failed piezo ignitor or electronic ignition module. Piezo ignitors are not expensive, although electronic control modules can be a little pricey.

If the failure is limited to one or two burners, inspect the flash tubes, which are generally secured with spring clips. These often come loose due to vibration, resulting in dislodging of the tubes. Ensure the high-voltage wires are fully connected at both ends and intact without damage. Next, inspect the small burner ports on the side of the burners facing the flash tubes. These ports get clogged with debris, which can also occur on the main burner ports. Burner ports can be carefully cleaned with toothpicks. Be careful not to enlarge or damage the ports.

Finally, inspect the burner flame. It should be a distinct blue with no yellow. If the flame is not correct, or if you notice any other issues with the operation of the cooktop, it is important to have your cooktop serviced by a reputable RV repair center.

RV Water Heater Winter MaintenanceIn the third part of this multi-part series on RV inspection and maintenance, we will discuss the RV water heater. These articles provide tips on performing annual inspections and simple maintenance only. These pro-active steps should help mitigate unexpected component failures.

P&T valveWhen it comes time to inspect your water heater, it is a good opportunity to check for water leaks around the appliance, as there are several valves and connections that could leak or fail. With the water pump on or city water connected, look for leaks, drips, standing water or stains around the water heater, especially the rear where the connections are. Before winterizing, inspect the P&T valve (shown at the left) for proper operation by ensuring that the lever can be easily lifted with no binding. Check for excessive dripping from the valve, although some intermittent dripping is normal. If the P&T valve drips continuously, have your water heater checked by an RV Repair center.

If your RV has winterization bypass valves installed, ensure they are in the proper orientation for the desired operational mode. For instance, if your unit is winterized, make sure the valves are fully in the “bypass” position. Similarly, for normal operation, ensure the valves are completely rotated to the appropriate orientation. It is common for RV owners to fire up their water heaters, only to have lukewarm or cold water at the taps. This is almost always caused by a failure to fully open/close the bypass valves after winterization.

Inspect the front of the water heater for debris, insects, spider webs, etc. As with other propane appliances, insects like to make a home in the various tubes and orifices of the water heater.

Ignite the gas burner to make sure the heater lights properly and stays lit. If not, you need to have the water heater serviced.

Finally, inspect the drain plug. If you have a water heater with a steel tank, such as a Suburban, the drain plug will be integrated with a sacrificial anode rod. This rod gets attacked by the ions in the water, which prevents them from attacking the steel tank. Remove the anode rod and replace it if it is more than 70% worn. When replacing the anode rod, be sure to use Teflon tape (PTFE) on the threads to help seal them and make the rod easier to remove next season. If you have a water heater with an aluminum tank, such as an Atwood, it will have a simple drain plug. It is extremely important that you do not replace the plastic plug with a metal one. Using a metal plug that is not the same metal or alloy as the tank plug threads can result in a condition known as Galvanic Corrosion. This causes the metal interface, in this case, the threads to corrode, resulting in the plug being extremely difficult to remove. Stick with the plastic plug, and if the wrench flats start to round, purchase a new water heater plug. Camco makes an inexpensive replacement.

RV Appliance Winter Maintenance part 2In this second segment of a multi-part series on RV inspection and maintenance, we will discuss the RV furnace. These articles provide tips on performing annual inspection and simple maintenance only. These pro-active steps should help mitigate unexpected component failures.

Furnace

RV forced-air furnaces are available in a range of BTU values and consist primarily of a blower, combustion chamber, control board, and wall thermostat. However, another key component is the time delay relay (TDR). This device delays the furnace flame ignition to allow the blower to purge the combustion chamber of residual gas. Similarly, it forces the blower to continue operating after the flame is extinguished. It is important to remember this when using the furnace. When you turn up your thermostat to demand heat, the blower should come on immediately, while it may take up to two minutes for the burner to ignite. Similarly, when the set temperature is reached or the furnace is turned off, the blower will continue to run for a while even though the burner should turn off immediately.

Make yourself aware of where the furnace fuse is located. In most cases, it is in the 12V fuse block with the other fuses.

RV furnaces are usually located behind a cabinet or under the fridge. They are generally accessible via a removable panel, so it is a good idea to remove this panel and inspect the furnace and surrounding area. Clean any dust and debris from around the furnace housing. Since the furnace gets very hot during operation, it is very important to make sure there are no combustible materials or items located in the furnace area. It is recommended to not store anything around the furnace.RV furnace location

While you are inspecting the furnace, check the ducting for damage, cuts, or tears. If any of the ductwork has collapsed or become kinked, straighten it out. If there are any rips or tears, repair them using duct tape. Any flow restrictions in the ducts will not only limit the heating capacity in your RV but could also cause the furnace to overheat and short-cycle. Similarly, damage to the ducts can cause ancillary areas of the coach to overheat, possibly resulting in a fire hazard.

combustion chamber exhaustLocate the combustion chamber exhaust and intake tubes on the outside of the RV as shown in the photo. These can be identified as the familiar chrome double-tube fixture. On some furnaces, the tubes are integrated into an external furnace access panel and on others, the tube assembly is directly mounted to the RV sidewall. For the former configuration, the furnace components can be easily accessed by removing this exterior panel. For the latter, the components must be accessed from inside the RV by removing a panel from the furnace itself. Fortunately, there is no reason to access the furnace internals unless there is a component failure. If the combustion chamber develops a crack or hole, Carbon Monoxide (CO) can escape into the living areas of the coach instead of being vented to the outside through the exhaust port, which is an extremely dangerous situation. This is why it’s important to have a working CO detector in the coach.

Inspect the intake and exhaust tubes and remove debris, insects, webs, or nests. Insects like to hang out or nest in these tubes. If this is a chronic problem on your coach, you may choose to purchase vent screens, which are available online or at RV supply stores.

new rv awning tipsThere are certain RV accessories that RVers from all walks of life can unanimously agree are must-have items; among the list of necessary products, RV awnings always make the cut.

They allow RVers to sit outside and relax while providing relief from the domineering, harsh sun, and they expand the RV’s living space by creating a peaceful outdoor area perfect for lounging around while enjoying the grandness of the regal outdoors.

Because RV awnings elevate the RV experience, you most likely don’t want to hit the road without one. That being said, if your old awning is tattered and torn and you’re looking for a replacement, or if you’re in the market for your very first awning, it can be difficult knowing how to start picking out a new one. To help you find a reliable product, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Decide Which Awning Fabric Is Best For You

RV awningsWhen you’re shopping for a new awning for your RV, you’ll find that most options come in one of two fabrics: vinyl or acrylic. In order to figure out which one would serve your needs best, it’s important to understand the difference.

  • Acrylic fabric is made from woven cloth that is designed to be breathable. Air circulates throughout, meaning that this kind of fabric will dry quickly. The circulation also tends to make the temperature cooler under the canopy, which is a major plus. It’s water resistant (not waterproof), and it typically holds up better when exposed to sunlight. You’ll most likely find more styles to choose from in acrylic rather than vinyl.
  • Vinyl is made from plastic and is mildew-resistant (though not mildew-proof). This kind of fabric is waterproof and tends to be easier to clean.

Size and Set Up Matter

Not all RV awnings are created to fit all rigs, and selecting the wrong size of awning could lead to a frustrating experience where the awning you invest has issues attaching to your RV, and if it does attach, it could obstruct your windows and entrance.

Aside from finding the right size, it’s important to know how to set up your awning properly. Most awnings come with straightforward instructions, but if you don’t feel confident in setting yours up, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. If an awning is not attached correctly and sturdily, the awning could injure someone sitting under it, as the structural integrity and safety of your awning depends on it being set up properly.

If you’re unsure of what size of awning to get or how to set one up, there are plenty of helpful articles online, but for the best results, you may want to reach out to an awning company with the specific make and model of your RV or take your rig into a local RV dealership. They should be happy to help point you in the right direction, and you’ll feel peace of mind knowing that your awning fits perfectly and is attached safely.

Research the Awning Brand’s Reputation

Knowledge truly is power, and you’ll feel much more confident in committing to a brand if you take the time to first evaluate the company’s reputation. Have they been around for a while? Have they made a name for themselves in the industry? Call the company’s customer service number. Do they seem happy to answer all of your questions? Are they knowledgeable about their products?

Taking the time to ask these questions and do a bit of preliminary research will help you prevent purchasing a lackluster product.

Understand the Warranty Terms  

You’ll want to make sure you understand how the warranty works before coming to a final decision on which RV awning to commit to. This helps you better understand how to handle the details, such as:

  • If something is defective
  • If you accidentally cause harm to the product
  • How long the warranty is good for
  • Where to go to for warranty work (Is there a location close to you?)
  • What is and isn’t covered under warranty
  • What you need in order for the warranty to be honored

Understanding the terms first will help you find a company that you feel will best support you even after the initial purchase.

Get Advice From Fellow RVers

Whether you have a few people in mind who you can talk to in person, or you peruse through some RV-related forums and blogs, you should be able to find answers to your questions, unbiased feedback on specific awnings, and suggestions from those who own the exact same type of RV as you. The best type of advice tends to come straight from the horse’s mouth, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and strike up a helpful discussion.

RV Appliance Winter Maintenance | Part 1 – Refrigerator

RV maintenanceEven if you use your coach through the winter months, or don’t experience the cold or harsh winters that some of us do, it is still important to perform regular maintenance on key components of your RV. This is most conveniently done either before putting your RV into storage or before taking it out. Over the next few articles, we will be discussing some important tips for your RV that may help prolong the life of key components and appliances and prevent unplanned downtime.

The most important thing to remember, and something that I often mention in my articles, is the importance of having your propane (LP) system professionally inspected at least once per year and anytime you suspect a leak or malfunction. An experienced RV technician with LP experience (and often a state or provincial license) will inspect your system, checking all appliances for proper pressure, operation, and leaks. Failure to keep your propane system functioning properly can result in poor or no performance of appliances, or even personal injury or death in the case of a leak!

In addition to the professional servicing, there are certainly some proactive inspection and maintenance tasks you can perform yourself, and we will start by looking at the propane appliances. Note that this article assumes that your appliances are generally functioning properly. As you perform these inspections, make note of any problems so they can be relayed to the service shop during your annual checkup.RV refrigerator

Refrigerator

As with all appliances, start by making sure the equipment and areas around them are clean.

  • In the case of the refrigerator, inspect the roof or top sidewall vent for damage, debris, blockages, and overall cleanliness.
  • Re-caulk any cracked or missing sealant on the covers.
  • Open the bottom access panel and clean out the area around the rear of the refrigerator.
  • Insects love the smell of the ethyl mercaptan used to odorize the LP gas, so often build nests, spin webs, or generally hang-out near the burner area of flame appliances. Use a brush and/or compressed air to clean the rear of the fridge, including the burner.
  • Light the fridge and make sure the flame is blue with slight yellow tipping and that there is no “whistling” or “howling” to the flame.
  • If so, mention this to the RV technician, as it may indicate a required adjustment.
  • Perform a quick visual inspection of other elements, such as wiring, for any other areas of concern.
  • Ensure your refrigerator is functioning and cooling properly in all operation modes.
  • Take note of the location of the fridge fuses, which are located on the control board, which is located on the back of the refrigerator behind a plastic cover. If your fridge stops working for some reason, check these fuses first.
  • Thoroughly clean the inside of the fridge, including the door seals.
  • A good way to check the integrity of the door seals is to place a dollar bill (or any other denomination) between the seal and the door, then close the door (without applying extra pressure) and pull the bill out. If the bill slides out easily, the door seals are too loose. Repeat this procedure at various points on the seal.
  • Verify your fridge and freezer are maintaining the correct temperature. If not, it may just be a matter of adjusting the thermostat setting or thermistor location as indicated in your owner’s manual. You may wish to purchase an inexpensive refrigerator thermometer for this purpose.
  • Check the interior light and defrost the refrigerator if there is excessive ice on the evaporator fins.
  • Make sure the drain hose is not blocked by checking for excessive water in the drip tray under the evaporator.
  • Finally, check for cosmetic damage that may jeopardize the operation or safety of the fridge.

RV Fires and Extinguishing Them Safely

Extinguishing RV firesRecreational vehicles, campers, motorhomes in all classes contain large amounts of flammable materials. Do you have a plan in the event of a fire? RVs may become fully engulfed in flames within a matter of minutes.  From 2009 to 2013, an average of 5,540 fires per year involved motorhomes and other recreational vehicles, according to estimates provided by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The absolute first rule of RV firefighting is:

  1. Save lives first and property second.
  2. Get your occupants and yourself to safety before attempting to extinguish a fire.
  3. Use the firefighting tools on hand only if you can do so without endangering your life or that of others.

 

RV fireWhatever the type RV you own, for safety’s sake, you need to know where the fire is most likely to start. About ½ of all RV fires occur while vehicles are stationary. There are many different areas within an RV where fire can start:

  • Engine compartment
  • Refrigerator
  • Propane and propane leaks
  • Electrical shorts
  • Faulty wiring including wiring in generators, water heaters and air conditioners
  • Any combustible items within the unit, such as paper, cloth and cooking oil (any cooking done in your RV MUST be attended)

What if we told you that a fire suppression device was available that can be delivered by throwing it into the fire ahead of you or as you are exiting the vehicle, (not a ball device). It has the capability of fully suppressing a fire up to 5,300CU.FT.(larger than the inside of a 45’ RV) and will remove up to 1,000°F of temperature in less than 60 seconds.

The fire suppressing agent used in this device is US EPA SNAP approved. It is NON-TOXIC, does not remove oxygen, is environmentally friendly with no Ozone depletion potential and no global warming potential and can be cleaned up with a broom and dustpan.

This tool is currently in use by thousands of organizations in North America from firefighters/first responders to commercial fishing fleets and industrial users.

X-Tinguish

The unit is called the X-Tinguish® FST (Fire Suppression Tool). The FST is the World’s Most Advanced Aerosol Fire Suppression tool. We say, “When Seconds Count, Just Pull the Pin and Throw it in! “and let the X-Tinguish® FST do the rest.

This has not changed- The absolute first rule of RV firefighting is:

 

  1. Save lives first and property second.
  2. Get your occupants and yourself to safety before attempting to extinguish a fire.
  3. Use the firefighting tools on hand only if you can do so without endangering your life or that of others.
  4. Now you can add, “THROW IN THE FST AND CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT”.

The X-TINGUISH® FST is a small, portable unit that contains potassium based chemical components. It is designed to be a first-use method to combat class A, B, C, and K fires.

Things To Know Before Plugging In At Home

Plugging In At HomeEveryone is excited, we’re going CAMPING!!!  Let’s get the rig ready for the big trip, bring it to the driveway, cool down the refrigerator and pack up all our stuff.  We all do this, but most of us don’t know the precautions that should be taken before we just plug the unit in and stuff it full of goodies.

First, most driveways have a slight slant away from the garage for drainage.  This slant might be enough to actually ruin our refrigerator if left running for even a couple of days!  RV refrigerators or absorption refrigerators have no moving parts and rely on heat and gravity to create a chemical reaction and cool the refrigerator.evaporator coil

The solution is heated with either an LP flame or by plugging it into a 120- volt heat element. The solution rises up to the evaporator coil and must zig zag it’s way back to the boiler assembly by gravity.  If the refrigerator is unlevel, approximately 6 degrees side to side and 3 degrees front to back, the solution will pool at one end and start to flake and become blocked.  Eventually, the solution will not be able to make the cycle and not cool efficiently.  Make sure the rig is level on the driveway by using the round level disc provided by the refrigerator manufacturer.  This is a common issue as we are not sleeping in the coach at night and don’t notice it is not level.

Next, make sure you are plugging the unit into a dedicated outlet that has enough capacity for your rig.  Too often owners simply plug the unit into a wall outlet thinking “I’m just cooling the refrigerator down”.  When you plug your rig into an electrical outlet, the power goes to the distribution center and supplies 120-volt appliances AND the converter which will periodically charge your batteries.  Even if you have everything in the rig off except the refrigerator, your batteries will drain slightly and the converter will kick on and charge the batteries.  This can be as little a 2 amp draw, or up to 9 amps!  Add that to the draw of the refrigerator which could be another 4-9 amps and you could have as much as an 18 amp draw.  Most residential outlets are connected to a 10-15 amp circuit breaker which would not be enough for your rig.  Plus, those outlets are usually “ganged” to other outlets with a refrigerator, freezer, or air compressor which would also draw from the circuit.  It’s a good idea to have an electrician wire a dedicated outlet with at least a 20 amp circuit for your rig.

And finally, make sure your extension cord is rated for the correct draw and not over 25 feet.  Typical medium duty cords you get from home improvement stores are only rated for 10 amps and not heavy enough for your needs.  If you need an extension cord, make sure it’s rated for your needs and not over 25 feet.

Just a few precautions while gearing up for your great adventure will help eliminate headaches or worse so you can hit the open road!

Tips For A Better Driving Experience – Part 3

Better RV Driving ExperienceJust to review, we started the first session of the driving experience with getting to know your rig such as weight ratings, mirrors, turning radius and staying in the middle of the road.  In part two, we covered weight ratings as it pertained to tires and specific tire related issues.  Now we are going to talk about actually being on the road and for what to be prepared!

Your Highway Lanes

Most beginners have a tendency to hug the right side of the road because we have become conditioned to place our vehicles in a certain spot on typical highways and interstates.  But we are now driving 102.5” RVs rather than the typical 72” car or truck and that puts us too close to the shoulder and the potential to drop off and cause issues.

Use your mirrors and backup camera if available.  There are several wireless backup cameras available on the market that I believe are good for everyone driving or towing an RV. Not only are the good for backing up, but also for positioning and to see what is behind you while going down the road.  Don’t go the cheap route with the license plate version for $75. It does not have the distance to get from the back of the RV to the tow vehicle.  Tadi Brothers and Rear View Safety seem to have great reviews and are about $300 which is a good investment in my opinion!

While driving down the road, space yourself evenly between the middle road markings and the white line along the passenger side of the road.  This line has been applied to give motorist a focal point to see when there is bad weather or blinding light from an oncoming vehicle.  Use it to help position your rig.rv highway driving

Be Prepared

There are two statements I use often in my driving seminars;

  1. Be Prepared
  2. It’s easier to stay out of trouble than to get out of trouble

Be Prepared means taking the time to practice the turning issues we discussed in part 2, setting up the mirrors, knowing where the blind spots are, and not just jumping in a unit and taking off!

#2 pertains to watching for issues as you drive such as:

  • an intersection with a tight turn
  • heavy traffic
  • pulling into a fueling station with limited space for getting out or the potential for another car coming in to block you in
  • looking ahead to see what might be a potential obstacle at the off ramp, intersection, boulevard street, fueling station, campgrounds or tourist spots.

One thing I try to encourage new RV owners is to constantly think…Drive Thru, Not Back Up!  As you travel and go into fueling stations, rest stops, and campgrounds, look for the easiest way to get in and out which is to circle around in some cases and give yourself the opportunity to drive straight out and not have to back up!  Don’t put yourself in a situation you need to get out of trouble!

Seatbelts

driving RVAlways wear your seatbelt and make sure it is adjusted properly!  The seatbelt performs two functions in a motorhome – crash protection and stability in the seat.  Most motorhome seats are fairly high pedestals and a quick lane change or dropping a front tire off the shoulder can create a momentum shift that can actually throw a driver off the seat!

Speed

According to most driving statistics, traveling at 65 mph is the optimum speed for the best fuel economy.  Every 5 mph will decrease mpg by at least 1 mpg.  Keep in mind this data has several factors that can affect the results such as the weight of the vehicle with contents, something towed, and road conditions.  However, maintaining a 65 mph speed will allow you to adjust to several driving issues that make your travels much more enjoyable.

Also, driving at 65 mph allows you to speed up or slow down to accommodate external situations that will encounter.  For example, if you are driving on an interstate with a merge lane coming ahead and you see a vehicle attempting to merge, you can determine if it’s better to speed up a couple mph or slow down.  Almost every state road use law states the merging vehicle must yield the right of way, however, we know that does not always happen.  Be prepared! Determine if it’s better to speed up or slow down. Most of the time I slow down and let them come in.  I try not to move to the left lane as it seems every time I do that, I get stuck there for miles!  Since I do not have the acceleration capabilities to speed up and get back to the right lane, other cars “shoot” around me to the right.  I like to stay in the right lane whenever possible.

Steering Wheel Hand Placement

Place your hands on the steering wheel at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock.  When we first learned to drive we were told 10-2, however, due to the way airbags are designed, they now recommend 9-3.   Airbags are designed to deploy up and down with indentations on the side.  If you have your hands at 10-2 the bags will blow them off the wheel or worse, dislocate your shoulders.  Most larger motorhomes do not have airbags due to the massive size of the windshield however it’s good to practice this for the towed vehicles as well.

Better Driving Experience - Part 2In Part 1 of this discussion, we outlined getting started, getting acquainted with your rig and making a practice run in a parking lot prior to hitting the road.  One of the most essential maintenance items you can conduct for a safe and enjoyable road trip is checking your weight ratings and know proper tire inflation and maintenance.

Weight Ratings

Understanding weight ratings and knowing what your rig, tow vehicle, and towed vehicle actually weigh is essential to prevent excess brake wear, axle problems and tire blowouts!

  1. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

This is the maximum weight your rig can weigh with everything inside going down the road including personal items, propane, water, and people the case of a motorhome.  Today’s new RVs have a weight sticker that tells what the rig weighs “dry”, and Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) meaning how much you can put inside before hitting GVWR.  Most owners have no idea how much weight they are carrying. They see all the huge compartments and think they can fill them up!  Not so.  Once you get your rig loaded, take it to a CAT Scale and get it weighed.

CAT scalesCAT Scales are available at most major truck stops like Pilot or Flying J, or visit www.catscale.com and find one near you.  For $10 you can use the platforms to put the front wheel on the first platform, back wheels on the second, and towed vehicle on the third.  This will not only tell us the GVWR when we add the two axles, it will tell us GAWR as well.

2.  Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)

The GVWR is the weight the entire rig can weigh, however, each axle has a weight rating that must not be exceeded as well.  Usually, the front axle is the lightest and most abused by RV owners.  You should have a data plate inside the vehicle or on the tongue of a trailer with the GVWR and GAWR posted.  Trucks, cars and trailers should put the front wheels of the tow vehicle on the first platform, the drive or back axle on the second, and the trailer or 5th wheel on the third.  This will give you axle weights on individual axles and tell you if you might have too much weight on the back end of the tow vehicle.  This is a common mistake with 5th wheel trailers as owners tend to fill the large compartment under the bedroom and put items in the bed of the truck as well.

It is also recommended to have your rig weighed by individual wheel position as some rigs will have over 1000 extra pounds of “accessories” on one side or another.  The only way to accomplish this is to have individual platforms such as those provided by The Recreational Vehicle Safety and Education Foundation (RVSEF).  Visit their site at: www.rvsafety.com to find weighing locations in your area.RV weighing

Tire Maintenance and Proper Inflation

Tires are the most vulnerable component on our rigs and the most neglected.  A small percentage of owners actually know how to determine proper inflation.  It’s not the marking on the side of the tire – that’s maximum inflation at maximum weight.  If you are not fully loaded to GVWR, your tires will be overinflated and have less tread on the road.  The only way to find proper inflation is to weigh the coach which we just talked about and refer to the tire manufacturer’s tire chart.

Once you find the weight on the individual tire, refer to the chart, find the tire size, dual or single application, and the weight.  That is the proper tire pressure for your tire!  My truck tires are a good example which recommend 61 psi at maximum load.  During normal driving I don’t have a truck bed full of dirt or drywall so 61 psi would be overinflated and my truck would ride like Fred Flintstone’s car with rock wheels!  I drive with about 35 psi.

Another issue is underinflated tires.  If your tires are just 10 psi lower than proper inflation, it reduces carrying capacity by 25%!  Your tires should be checked every day you hit the road, not just glanced at or hit with a “trucker’s bat”!  Make it part of your pre-trip inspection list or get a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Weather Checking

Check the sidewall of the tire periodically for signs of cracking known as weather checking.  Exposure to UV rays will dry out the material and make it crack.  If you are letting your rig sit for more than a day exposed to the elements, cover the tires.cover tires

Finally, as you are driving, check the temperature of the tires, the axle, and the brakes.  I carry an Infra-red laser temperature tester and when I stop for fuel I test the temperature.  It typically will run about 20-30 degrees hotter than ambient temperatures which is normal.  However, if I see a spike, then I know something is wrong!  Could it be starting to lose pressure and it’s working harder?  If the hub is hot, do the bearings on my trailer need to be repacked?  If the brake rotor or drum is hotter than normal, are the brakes set too high?  Once you get a few readings, you’ll know what is normal and what is excessive.  Also, if one side of the rig runs consistently hotter than the other…it’s time to get the coach weighed by individual wheel position as it might be too heavy on that side and everything is working harder.  You might need to move some items to the other side.Infra-red laser temperature tester

Whether you own a motorhome or towable like I do, ignoring strange sounds, odd smells and unusual moisture can be dangerous or even deadly. Your goal as a proud RV owner is to solve minor problems before they become major RV catastrophes. Pay close attention to these lessons my spouse and I learned and you’ll keep your RV – and your life – out of harm’s way.

RV Catastrophe Lesson #1:

Act Now to Avoid Tragedy

Switch burnLast month when the weather became warm enough for us to run our RV air conditioner, I noticed an unusual electrical smell. Exhausted from running errands, we simply said “Well that’s weird.” Then we turned off the air conditioner, opened the windows and forgot about it. Little did we know the danger lurking inside our home.

The smell returned a few weeks later, only this time it was accompanied by a thick haze rising up to the ceiling. Panicked and curious, we shut off all appliances and found one important clue. The RV couldn’t connect to shore power, but our solar power system was working. It was late at night, so the next day my husband did a more thorough electrical investigation and pinpointed the problem. The wires inside our electrical transfer switch box came apart. While the switch slowly melted over time, our air conditioner’s intake vent was pulling the smoke up.

We averted a devastating RV catastrophe but more importantly received a critical lesson about rapidly investigating all odd occurrences inside the RV. We’ve had other reminders over the years but the severity of this one promises to make this lesson stick. Some RV catastrophes leading up to it included other doozies:

Dampness in Unusual Places is Not Normal

basement plumbingOne hot, sunny July afternoon as the Arizona sun baked my brain, I forgot to tell my handy husband about moisture in our RV basement. The next day, a neighbor knocked on our door and said “Hey there’s water coming out of your basement!” Jim dug around and noticed that a plumbing connector had loosened in transit. Eventually, the compartment dried out but sadly, my failure to point out the problem resulted in permanently damaged fiberglass siding.

RV Catastrophe Lesson #3:

Mother Nature is Unpredictable

A few years later we almost destroyed our RV plumbing. After moving into our Colorado summer cabin one spring, we neglected to drain the RV water lines. One week later a spring snowstorm hit and turned our water lines into popsicles. The lines thawed, but we didn’t discover the bigger problem until we moved back into the RV in October: the shut-off valve inside our toilet had cracked. The first time we used the RV again and connected to city water, a swimming pool formed inside our rig while we were away. We should have drained the RV when we moved out in spring, then thoroughly inspected every inch of plumbing after the big freeze.

Thankfully I am married to the Bob Villa of RVing so our RVs survived these incidents without too much harm. After ten years of full-time RVing, now we are finally more diligent about RV maintenance. Take it from two people who learned things the hard way: regular RV maintenance and problem solving gives you far more peace of mind when your wheels start turning. It might even save your life.
