Plugging In And Not Blowing Out!  Understanding Your Power Requirements

Plugging In and Not Blowing OutAs the RV industry continues to explode in sales, so does the diversity of how people are using their rigs.  When I first entered the RV industry “YEARS” ago, there were basically two types of RVers, the snowbirds who retired and either went South for the winter or became full timers traveling the country, or the family that did weekends and an occasional vacation then the unit sat in storage for 6 months.

Times have changed, people are using their RVs to support their hobbies such as quilting, dog shows, flea markets, and others.  It makes sense. Why fly or drive to an event and stay in a hotel paying way too much money for a room someone else slept in last night?  Why stay 20-30 minutes away from your hobby destination and fight traffic and high priced restaurants?  Staying close to the event, cooking your own meals, and sleeping in your own bed makes way more sense!

However this also means at times you will not be able to plug into an electrical source that is designed for your rig.  The typical RV runs on a 30 amp system which provides 120-volt power to the distribution center for appliances such as the roof AC, refrigerator on electric, and outlets that power the microwave and other items.  It also supplies power to the converter which charges your 12-volt house battery/batteries.  This supplies power to the roof vents, interior lights, and any appliance that runs off LP.

If you are going to be staying at any location that is not equipped for RVs you need to know your power requirements as well as what power they have available.  Most residential electrical outlets provide 120-volt power with 15 amps and are typically “ganged” to other outlets so this reduces the power available.  Your RV will need:

  • 14 amps to run one roof AC
  • 8 amps for a refrigerator on the electric mode
  • 9 amps for the converter to charge the house batteries, not counting any other appliance you have plugged into an outlet!

If you plug into this residential outlet, you will risk blowing the circuit or even worse, a fire.

If you do need to plug into a residential outlet there are some precautions you can take.  First, identify what amperage is available at the outlet.   This can be done by verifying the circuit breaker the outlet is connected to at the electrical panel.  Most garage outlets are 15 amps but as stated earlier, they can be “ganged” to other outlets in the garage for a freezer, air compressor, and other items.  Outlets at a fairplex parking lot or other outlets attached to a light pole are typically the same.  So these outlets will not have enough power for you to run everything in your RV.

  • Do not run the roof AC if possible as it will draw 14 amps at maximum capacity.
  • Open the roof vents, side windows, and park in a shaded area if possible.
  • If you need to run the roof AC, run a generator!
  • Run you refrigerator on LP mode instead of Auto as this will default to the 120-volt operation and draw amps.
  • On the LP mode it will draw power from the house batteries which hopefully will last a couple of days before needing to be recharged.
  • Make coffee on the stove top or campfire rather than using an electrical coffee maker.
  • Don’t use the microwave, get creative with the stove top, grills, or campfire.
  • Do not use an electrical ceramic heater, these draw a huge amount of power!  It’s better to use a catalytic heater such as the Olympic or Camco version which uses a small LP cylinder.  These are very safe for interior heating as they do not reduce oxygen and create very little condensation.

Another important issue is to use the proper extension cord to plug into the outlet and the distance.  If you are plugging into a 15 amp outlet, make sure the cord is rated to 15 amps and no longer than 25’ total length from your shoreline cord to the outlet, otherwise you will get a drop in power and risk an overheating situation.  If you need to go with a longer cord you will need to use a heavier gauge extension cord.

Conserving Energy While “Off-Grid”

conserving RV energyDry camping refers to camping without hookups. For many, the main attraction of dry-camping is to be “off the grid”, or in a wilderness area with little sign of civilization.

Dry camping can be a challenge, especially over longer periods of time, since it can be difficult to adequately conserve the energy resources available in an RV.

This article is not directed at RV owners who have tricked out their coaches with solar panel arrays, large battery banks, etc. Rather, the focus will be on instructing those who want to experience dry-camping without significant modification to their RVs.

There are three main areas to think about when conserving RV resources. These are water, power, and propane. Additionally, you must consider the time you will spend off-grid, as well as how many people will be using the resources.

Water:

If you are concerned about your fresh water capacity, you can fill extra containers of water before your trip and pack them. If you will be staying at a campground, there may be water taps there. If so, you should consider using one to do your dishes, brush your teeth, etc. If the facility has washrooms, you can avoid excessive use of your holding tanks. If your fresh water capacity is limited, use your own water sparingly, bring water with you and/or rely on the campground supply as much as possible.

Power:

Use your interior lighting and 12V appliances only when required. Consider purchasing LED bulbs for your RV fixtures. Purchase them online, as they are a fraction of the cost of buying them retail. In colder weather, bundle up and use your furnace only sparingly, as the blower consumes significant power.

Operating a generator may be an option, but always adhere to the rules of the location. Most places prohibit running the generator at night, some limit generator hours during the day, and some don’t allow generator use at all. Make sure your generator has a spark arrester on the exhaust pipe. This is a requirement by the department of forestry. Most professionally installed generators have this but check your documentation to be sure. Use the generator sparingly.

An inverter is another option, but don’t use it for large loads. A combination of generator and inverter is a good option. Whether you are using 110V or 12V DC power, do so only as required.  Charge your battery when necessary using your generator or vehicle alternator.

Propane:

This is one area where you generally don’t have to worry, since most RVs are equipped with enough LP capacity. Just make sure your containers are full before setting out and your LP gas should last a long time.

However, there are some tips for conserving propane.

  • Consider using a camp stove and cook outside.
  • Think about water heater use – if you have a small amount of water to boil, do so over the stove, as it takes less propane.
  • If you can use the campground facilities you may not need to use your water heater at all.
  • The RV water heater and furnace are the primary consumers of LP fuel, so use both sparingly.
  • The fridge consumes a tiny amount of propane, so this should not be a consideration, and is a high-priority appliance.

These tips should help you conserve your RV energy while dry camping. Additional modifications can be made should you decide to make off-grid camping more of a lifestyle.

Synthetic Oil and Oil Viscosity

synthetic oil and oil viscosityFor years, the standard in changing engine oil has been every 3 months or 3,000 miles, no exceptions.  Then along came synthetic oil which advertised going 5,000-7,000 miles before changing and the debate began.

Motor oils main function is to lubricate moving components in the engine as the heat that is generated would cause the components to expand and lock up.  The motor oil creates a separating layer to protect these components which reduces heat and friction.

To start, let’s take a look at the composition of both conventional oil and synthetic oil.

Conventional oil is made up of 75-90% base oil and 10-25% additives such as detergents, rust inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, and other components.

Synthetic oil starts as base oil refined from crude oil just like conventional oil, but then is distilled down to the molecular level to eliminate impurities and then is customized with additives by the oil manufacturer.

Viscosity

oil viscosityOil is graded by viscosity which is the ability to flow in different temperatures.  The Society Of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has developed a test to measure and grade the flow of oil through a pipe and assigns a number to coincide with that flow.  The higher the number, the slower the flow rate.  Conventional oil with a single number such as SAE 30 has high viscosity, but will be difficult to start in cold weather.  These ratings are sometimes referred to as “weight”.  Using a lower weight oil such as SAE 5 would be easy to start in cold weather, but does not provide enough protection when the engine heats up to 210 degrees operating temperature.

Therefore oil manufacturers have developed multigrade viscosity oils that will be easier to start in cold weather and provide better protection during operating temperatures.  For example, SAE 5W-30 has a base weight or viscosity of 5 for easier start up in cold which the “W” stands for winter, and a higher viscosity of 30.  Many people think this is simply mixing two different viscosity or weight oils together, however it actually starts with the lower viscosity base oil and additives are used to increase the viscosity.  Components such as Pour Point Depressants (PPD) and Viscosity Index Improvers are able to increase the viscosity at higher temperatures.  Basically the base oil starts with smaller molecules or polymiers that flow by each other easily when cold, then expand with the heat and lump together creating a higher viscosity.

When To Change Oil

Today, most engine manufacturers rely on the onboard computer to regulate the usage, temperatures, and other factors to determine the proper oil change interval.  The “Change Oil Soon” light indicates when it’s time to change the oil.  Diesel engines have much longer oil change intervals than gasoline and some diesel models still recommend an actual mileage/time oil change interval.  Check your chassis owner’s manual for recommendations.  In my truck, I stick with the “Change Oil Soon” light.  In a motorhome, since you typically don’t put as many miles on, I suggest changing a little more often. This might seem a little counterintuitive but oil and other fluids break down over time.  So, a vehicle that spends a lot of time in the driveway will probably need an oil change more often than a vehicle that is driven often.checking oil

Conventional vs Synthetic

For years it was a heated debate on the ability to use synthetic oil or not.  Most engine manufacturers fought the new oil stating it would void the warranty and could not be “mixed” with conventional oil and would not protect the engine!  As stated previously, synthetic oil actually starts as base oil and is distilled to a much cleaner oil so all the hype is just that…hype and not true.  You can switch to synthetic and even back to conventional if necessary without damage to an engine and you can even put a quart of conventional in an engine that has synthetic if you are in a situation where synthetic can not be found and you are low on oil.  However, it’s a good idea to carry an extra quart of what you do have in the engine as you travel!

synthetic oilThe advantage of synthetic oil is it provides better protection longer.  Even though both conventional oil and synthetic have similar additives such as anti-wear, anti-foam, detergents, rust inhibitors, and corrosion inhibitors, the synthetic provides superior protection at the end of the oil change interval.  Typically synthetic manufacturers don’t claim the oil extends oil change intervals, the real advantage is synthetic maintains a superior flow from new to used several months/miles down the road.

When I was young driving cement truck for a local company, an oil representative came to our location trying to get the management to switch to synthetic oil and conducted a very impressive demonstration.  He filled three Styrofoam cups with various conventional oils and one with his synthetic.  He then poured all the oil out of the cups and showed us there was still a small amount of oil on the side wall of the cups.  He then set them on a shelf asking us to inspect the cups the next morning.  When we got to work the next day the three conventional oils had a small amount of oil standing in the bottom of the cup and the sides where bone dry.  The synthetic oil cup still had a slick film on the side of the cup.  His statement was; with conventional oil, as your vehicle sits overnight, the oil coating the components in the upper portion of the engine will drain down to the oil pan and provide little coating and protection at start up the next morning.  It takes several minutes for the oil to be pumped and circulated to the components causing friction and wear that will eventually cause damage.  The synthetic still had a thin layer the next morning and provided protection during start up.  Not necessarily University Research Data, but it was interesting.  More interesting…we switched to synthetic that summer and they reduced engine issues almost immediately.

RV Battery Types and The Power They Provide

RV Battery Types12-volt Deep Cycle batteries are the lifeline for RV enjoyment.  Not only do they power the common 12-volt functions like lights, roof vents, and such, but are also essential for powering any appliance running on the LP mode and even the absorption refrigerator on the 120-volt mode as the temperature sensor and monitor panel are powered by the 12-volt batteries!12-Volt battery

For the past 50+ years, RVs have mainly been powered by deep cycle, lead acid batteries which have lead plates placed vertically and are covered with a solution of water and sulfuric acid commonly called electrolyte.  In the RV application there is either a 12-volt battery that consists of 6 cells with plates, each producing 2.1 volts per cell.

The other type is a 6-volt batteries connected in series (positive to negative) which creates 12-volts, however two batteries are needed in this application.  There are only 3 cells per battery and each produces 2.1 volts per cell, so each battery produces 6.3 volts or 12.6 volts total just like the single 12-volt battery.  Each cell consists of a positive lead plate covered with lead dioxide and a negative plate made of a specific type of lead with an insulating material placed between the two plates.

These batteries require a specific multistage charging procedure each month and are subject to sulfation if not stored and charged properly.  They “gas” during the bulk stage charge and lose acid which requires periodic inspection.  Most owners do not properly charge and store their lead acid batteries and therefore they have become a hot topic for replacement options.

Gel batteries where introduced in the Mid 70’s and still maintained the lead plates, but had a gel acid instead of the liquid which was designed to be a superior battery with less maintenance.

AGM batteryThen came the AGM or absorbed glass mat battery which was maintenance free and literally had fiberglass mats inside the battery to absorb the acid and could be stored sideways!  Many RVers believe that replacing the lead acid batteries with AGMs will double the power available.  This is not true, rather the AGM batteries require less maintenance and are less prone to sulfation.  This makes them a more powerful battery only after the lead acid batteries develop sulphur between the plates and lose storage capacity!

In 1980 Lithium Ion batteries were introduced, but were not used much until the early 2000’s as the price was out of this world!

12-volt deep cycle batteries are simply storage devices for power, they can not produce or create voltage without receiving a charge from an outside source known as a charger from either a converter, solar panel, or other source.  The size of the plates and amount of electrolyte determine the storage capacity or amp hours (AH) the battery can provide.  These are classified in terms of “Group” ratings such as Group 24, Group 27 etc.  The higher the group rating, the higher the amp hours and therefore the longer the battery can provide power before needing a recharge.  A typical battery rated for 125 AH can provide 10 amps of power for 12.5 hours, or 20 amps of power for 6.25 hours.

Lead Acid Discharge and Sulfation

When a 12-volt source is activated, such as an interior light or roof vent, a chemical reaction between the lead plates and the electrolyte occurs which produces the energy for the light.  This chemical reaction also begins to coat the positive and negative plates with a yellow build up known as lead sulfate which is normal during the discharge process. Lead sulfate continues to coat the plates as the battery discharges to the 10.5 volt stage at which time they are completely covered.

Lead sulfate can be reconditioned back to lead and electrolyte if conditioned or recharged properly and immediately.  If left in a discharged stage the lead sulfate will form hard crystals that can not be converted back to lead and electrolyte and will diminish the storage capacity.

When not in use, all lead acid batteries will discharge, the rate depends on the condition of the battery, temperature, and what parasitic draw is on the battery.  Typically a battery with no sulfation and with no additional draw, will discharge at approximately 4% per week.

A 125 AH battery left in storage without a charger will lose 5 AH per week which means it will lose 80 AH capacity in four months or well over 50% of it’s capacity in just one year!

Proper Recharging

Lead acid batteries require a multistage charge every month which starts with a bulk charge or high voltage (16V) charge which breaks up the Lead Sulfate on the plates and then goes into an equalizing and float charge.  Typical converters and battery chargers are simply a fixed voltage charger that recognizes a low charge (10.5v) and applied a fixed charge of 13.6 volts, which can not reconvert the lead sulfate on the plates.  Plus, the recharge time is very long compared to a multistage charger.

Some larger inverter/chargers do have a multistage charger which will condition the batteries.  Check your system to see if the charger of your inverter has a multistage and conditioning feature.  During the recharge stage, the water is being converted back to hydrogen and oxygen “gases” and can be flammable.  That is why they are contained in a vented compartment.  This is also why lead acid batteries need to have water added periodically as well.  Sealed batteries such as the AGM type contain the gases and keep them with the electrolyte.Vent well

There are some alternatives to getting a very expensive inverter/charger such as the Battery Minder from Northern Tool.  This device has had much success in the aviation and golf cart industry and is starting to turn some heads in the RV market.  The Battery Minder uses high impact waves rather than high voltage to condition the batteries which means less gassing and less water loss.

Progressive Dynamics has introduced converters/chargers with a smart charging system called the Charge Wizard which recognized the condition of the battery and adjusts the charge accordingly to provide proper conditioning.  For more on their system visit https://www.progressivedyn.com/rv/power-converters/

Here are some quick tips for better battery maintenance:

  1. Use a multistage charger or conditioner
  2. Check your fluid level before every trip and add as needed
  3. Match the correct size battery with your 12-volt needs.  Don’t expect to dry camp for days on a group 24 battery!
  4. Find ways to reduce your need for battery power during dry camping such as
  5. Using the campfire to cook and make coffee
  6. Replace halogen and incandescent bulbs with LED
  7. Use a portable Catalytic Heater vs the RV furnace

What You Need To Know When Your RV Needs A Tow

RV needs a towIn terms of avoiding breakdowns, have your recreational vehicle regularly inspected and maintained by professional technicians. This includes regular inspection of the chassis components such as brakes and tires, as well as house systems like propane and batteries. The heart of the RV system is propane and electricity, so it is important that these systems be kept safe and in good working condition.

Bear in mind that towing a motorhome or trailer is more costly and complex than having your passenger vehicle towed. Coach-Net provides affordable peace of mind because they specialize in assisting RVers and dispatching the proper recovery trucks and crew for the job. This is true whether you have a break-down while towing a popup trailer or in a 40’ diesel coach. In the latter case, you will be serviced by a large tandem-axle tow truck that can easily carry the weight of a heavy diesel pusher. However, even a small tent-trailer requires special skill on the part of the tow driver, especially if there is a problem with the wheels or axle.

towing RVSince motorhomes can’t be towed backwards, and because they are rear-wheel drive, the tow driver will have to remove the driveshaft from your vehicle before it can be towed. They will usually put the shaft somewhere on their truck during the trip, then leave it with the mechanic at the destination shop. The shop will reinstall the drive shaft during the repair process, but it is important to understand that this step does occur during the recovery process. Don’t be alarmed when the driver crawls under your rig to remove your drive shaft. This is a perfectly routine process and mechanics are familiar with replacing the shaft.

Given the specialized equipment needed and knowledge necessary to tow all types and sizes of recreational vehicle, the cost to have your vehicle towed to a mechanic could be exorbitant without a Coach-Net membership. Whether you are pulling a trailer or driving a motorhome, you will likely need specialized service, be it from an RV repair shop or heavy duty mechanic. If you are like most RVers and enjoy traveling to parts unknown, it is unlikely you will be familiar with where these repair locations are. Coach-Net works with tow providers to ensure your vehicle or trailer is towed to the closest capable mechanic or technician, regardless of the distance. One of the many benefits of driving a diesel pusher is that the heavy duty truck shops equipped to perform mechanical service are generally open until very late at night, or sometimes even 24hrs. Many of these truck shops have driver lounges and may even have RV electrical hookups for your convenience while you wait.

Another thing to be aware of is the laws pertaining to passengers riding in vehicles in tow. If you are driving a motorhome with no tow vehicle and you have a breakdown, there may be a law preventing you from riding in your RV while it is under tow, and you may not all fit in the cab of the tow truck. In this case, you must arrange for alternate transportation. Your tow driver will inform you of the local laws.

Hopefully you never have to use the safety and towing tips but if you find yourself stranded with your RV, perhaps you will remember them.

What!  My Awning Needs Maintenance?

Awning MaintenanceMost RV owners take their awnings for granted.  Just pull them out when you get to the campground and don’t forget to put them away when leaving, right?  Wrong…  Just like any material used on an RV, awnings need to be cleaned and conditioned at least once a year and dried when put away or they will become deteriorated and moldy.

There are several types of awnings:

  • the patio awning that provides shade and a nice porch style area outside the entrance door
  • window awnings that help keep it cooler inside the rig
  • slide room awnings that help keep debris off the top of the slide room
  • entrance door awnings often found on diesel pushers

Most awnings are made of either acrylic or vinyl and are mildew resistant, however, mildew can form on the dirt trapped in the weave or on the material itself.  Acrylic awnings are designed with a woven material that allows air to circulate which helps the material dry faster.  Acrylic material is water-resistant, but once again, not waterproof!   Both can be cleaned with Dawn Dish Soap and it’s environmentally friendly.

Cleaning Your Patio Awning

  1. Pull the awning out, but don’t lift it up all the way, this will make it easier to reach up close to the rig.
  2. Put about ½ cup of dish soap in a bucket of water and use a soft bristle brush on an extension pole.
  3. Wet the entire awning down with a garden hose and wet the side of the rig just in case some of the stuff you are cleaning off runs down the side.  It will be easier to clean off if it’s not dry!
  4. Soak the brush in the soapy pail and start with the upper left-hand side of the top of the awning and work your way in 3-4’ squares across and down.
  5. Rinse off well and move to the underside of the awning as well.
  6. Next, determine if your awning has vinyl material or acrylic.
  7. Once you have determined the material, use the approved conditioner and apply as listed.
  8. Let the awning dry completely before storing it!
  9. Make sure you spend a little more time conditioning the stitching at the seams to keep them protected and reduce deterioration and coming apart.
  10. At this time also inspect for any loose or broken stitches which may need attention.

Maintaining Your Awning

  • Always have the awning dry completely before storing it throughout the rest of the year.  If it is stored wet, it will mold and mildew, and deteriorate the material.  Often times the awning will develop condensation during storage therefore it is recommended to pull the awning out occasionally and inspect it.
  • A&E awnings recommend a lubricant called Go-Easy to be applied to any moving part.  That would include the slide arms, arm-locking mechanism, and roller locking mechanism.  It’s important to use the recommended lubricant as some will attract dirt and grit and cause damage later.
  • Periodically inspect all of the fabric edges for wear and tear.  It’s not uncommon to find a tear at the attachment points of the awning to the sidewall rail.
  • Check all connection points to make sure they are secure and not starting to loosen, especially the arm attachments at the base of the arms and any attachment points on the sidewall.
  • Verify all screws or fasteners holding brackets are secure and sealed with an approved sealant for the type of sidewall material.
  • Spray silicone lubricant on the threads of the black locking knobs for the slide arms.

Keeping your Rig Rolling: RV Tires Part 2

Weighing RVIn Part 1, we discussed the importance of monitoring RV tire age along with condition. We will conclude this topic by discussing the importance of weighing your rig, as well as some differences in trailer tire types.

For the safety of the RV (and towing vehicle) occupants and other drivers, as well as longevity of the tires, it is fundamentally important to have your RV weighed. This is true whether the coach is a towable or motorized. Many people don’t realize that the inflation pressure stamped on the tire sidewall is not the recommended tire pressure, but rather the maximum safe inflation pressure. In many cases, this pressure is not the appropriate pressure at any given axle position. Also note that in most cases, each axle position will require a different recommended inflation pressure.RV tire pressure

Correct inflation pressure depends on many factors, but from a user perspective is primarily a function of tire manufacturer and weight being carried by the tire. In order to gain a full understanding of your RV weight, it is recommended to have a number of measurements taken. I have found the most convenient way to do this is to roll over a DOT highway scale when it is closed. Generally, these scales are left powered on when the scale is not open, and they normally have a large weight readout that can be used by truckers to observe their own weights. However, certified scales can be found at many truck stops, truck yards, commercial transport repair shops, and at public facilities.

Note that weights should be taken with the fuel and fresh water tanks full, holding tanks empty, and standard cargo aboard.

  1. First, take a weight reading of the entire unit. If you have a motorhome, weigh the entire vehicle by driving it onto the scale. Weigh a trailer without the towing vehicle on the scale.
  2. Next, weigh the front axle of the motorhome, then the rear axle set (tandem axles can be weighed together).
  3. Finally, weigh each wheel position separately. For instance, drive only the driver side front axle onto the scale, then the driver side rear axle, then the passenger side front and rear. In the case of a dually vehicle, it is not necessary to weigh each dually separately. Take note of each of these weights.CAT scale

The weights you have recorded provide a detailed picture of your rig, including total weight (GVW), as well as side-to-side, axle, and wheel loading. In terms of proper inflation pressure, use each wheel position weight to look up recommended air pressure on the tire manufacturers website or literature. Check the tire pressure cold, and maintain the recommended pressure at each axle position (inside/outside dually, as well as tandem or tri-axles).

One final word about tires. Always ensure your tires are the proper type for the application. For instance, if you have a trailer, check to see whether you have LT (light truck) or ST (special trailer) tires. ST and LT tires have different formulations specific to trailer or truck use, the details of which are outside the scope of this article. Although I generally recommend ST tires for trailers, it is not necessarily a bad thing to use LT tires. Talk to your tire dealer and become informed about each type so you may make an informed choice about which to use.

RV Furnace Efficiency: The Thermostat

RV Furnace thermostatToday we are seeing more RV enthusiasts using their RV for winter activities such as skiing, ice skating, and even ice fishing.  Even if you are not one of the die-hard cold weather enthusiasts, your RV adventure may take you to a location that will need the onboard heater to keep things warm.  An understanding of how your RV LP furnace operates is important to help make it run more efficiently and to prevent a malfunction.

RV furnaceJust like in your home, the thermostat senses the ambient temperature at the point of installation and can be set to the desired temperature.  Once the temperature falls below the setting, it creates a closed circuit which sends power to the furnace control board.  If you have an older model with a bi-metal thermostat it’s best to replace it with a newer digital RV model.  Make sure it matches the mode of operation your current thermostat has.

Some thermostats also control the air conditioner and either a heat strip or heat pump option.  A heat strip is simply a heat element or coil that is placed in the air conditioner and when operated heats the coils similar to an electric stove top or portable heater.  The air conditioner uses the fan only to send the heat into the coach.  This is a good option if you have free electricity as it does have a huge amp draw for the heat it produces.Elec Heat

Here is the confusing part…some thermostats have a mode that is labeled “Elec Heat” which RV owners think is an electric operation of the onboard furnace.  This is actually a heat pump option incorporated in the air conditioner.  A heat pump extracts BTU’s from the outside air to bring into the rig and remove cold air from inside the rig.  Heat pumps are only efficient with temperatures above approximately 35-40°!  So when the temperatures get below that, it blows cold air.  One more thing to know about thermostats is zones!  Keep in mind the thermostat can only sense the temperature in the location it has been placed, unless it has an option for zones with a temperature tensor in the bedroom or other location.

Once the thermostat senses the temperature has fallen below the temperature that was set, it creates a closed 12-volt circuit which is similar to touching two wires together that allows the voltage to flow to the furnace.  Keep in mind this could be 2-4 degrees lower before it creates the closed circuit.

The 12-volt circuit alerts the control module on the furnace which starts the blower as well as the combustion air wheel, which draws fresh air in from the vent on the outside of the coach.  A switch called the “sail switch” is located inside the blower assembly and the airflow pushes the switch up to make contact with the module and create another closed circuit.  This provides a feed back to the control module verifying everything is open and there is good air flow.  If your house batteries are below 10.5 volts, the blower will run, but will not have enough power or airflow to raise the sail switch enough to create the closed circuit.  Therefore the blower will continue to run but the furnace will not light.  Also, if you have a few heat vents closed, a rug over the floor vents, or a pinched or kinked supply hose in the rig, it will restrict the airflow and the sail switch will not rise, therefore the gas valve will not open and the spark igniter will not light the flame.RV furnace

Once the sail switch has verified sufficient airflow and created the closed circuit, the circuit board will open the gas valve which you should hear a distinctive click, followed by the spark ignitor clicking and lighting the LP mixture in the burner assembly.  Then the heat exchanger will heat to approximately 200 degrees and the air wheel pushes fresh air over the heat exchanger to provide warm air to the inside of the rig.  The air going through the heat exchanger is exhausted to the outside of the RV through an exhaust vent.

A high limit switch is located on the end of the heat chamber which measures the temperature and will shut the unit off if it gets higher than normal.  This can happen when interior registers get covered with a rug, vents are shut off, or supply hoses get pinched.RV furnace

To troubleshoot a nonworking furnace, first check the fuse at the distribution center, then the voltage supply to the furnace.  This can be done without removing the furnace.  If the blower wheel starts, but there is no heat or ignition, the sail switch typically is not raising high enough to close.  If the 12-volt supply is less than 10.5 volts, the fan will not turn fast enough to raise the sail switch, therefore it will not close and light.

If the fan does not turn on and there is 12-volt supply, check the thermostat by removing and touching the two wires together which will bypass the thermostat and send a signal to the module board.  If all this is good, then you will need to remove the furnace and verify the module board and the high limit switch.

If the unit starts, ignites, and runs for a short period of time, the high limit switch is sensing high temperature or is faulty.  Verify you have all vents open and unobstructed and all supply lines to the registers under couches and inside cabinets are not pinched or kinked.RV furnace

RV Tire SafetyMotorists often neglect to think about the objects that keep their vehicles rolling down the road in comfort and safety. RV owners are no exception to this rule, and in some cases are less likely to pay attention to the tires on their rigs. Even though tires are definitely not “out of sight”, they do tend to be “out of mind” for many people. Yet, the importance of keeping your RV tires in top shape cannot be overstated.

Tire Considerations

There are three main factors to consider when thinking about tires on any vehicle. These are age, condition, and inflation pressure. For passenger vehicles, tires usually wear out before they age out. In other words, most drivers wear out the tread on their tires before the tires wear out due to age. However, for RVs, the reverse is generally true. Because RV owners, even full-timers, generally put far fewer miles on their rigs than passenger vehicles are subject to, tires on RVs usually get old before the tread wears down. This is a significant point, because even when RV owners have the wherewithal to inspect their tires, they often only pay attention to tread depth and condition, rather than also being aware of the age of the tire.

Tire Life

Depending on the manufacturer, the average recommended life for motorhome tires is seven to ten years, and five years for trailer tires. However, it is important to consult your tire manufacturers website or visit your local tire retailer for specific information. All tires have a date code stamp on the sidewall. The DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires that Tire Identification Numbers (TIN) be a combination of the letters “DOT”, followed by eight to thirteen letters and/or numbers that identify the manufacturing location, tire size, and manufacturers code, along with the week and year the tire was manufactured.Tire manufacturer date

Since 2000, the week and year the tire was manufactured has been identified as the last four digits of the TIN, with the first two of those digits being the week of manufacture, and the last two being the year of manufacture. In the example above, the tire was manufactured in week 51 of 2007.

For tires manufactured prior to 2000, it should be noted that there should not be any tires of this vintage running on RVs today. For these tires, it was assumed at the time that they would not be in service for ten years. While they were required to have the same information as the tires produced today, the week and year the tire was manufactured was contained in the last three digits. The first two digits are the week of manufacture, and the last digit was the year.Tire manufacturer date

In the example above, the tire was manufactured in week 40 of the 8th year of the decade. In this case, that would be 1998, but unfortunately there is no indicator of which decade the tire was manufactured in. Fortunately, as indicated earlier, there should be no tires of this vintage rolling on RVs today.

Tire Inspection

Experiencing a tire blowout can be a terrifying event, especially on an RV. To minimize the risk of this happening, it is important to regularly inspect your tires, and know the exact manufacture date as indicated by the TIN. During your inspection, check for tire damage, especially to the sidewalls. Look for cuts, gouges, severe scuffing, abrasions, foreign objects embedded in them, etc. Based on information from the manufacturer and/or tire retailer, determine the recommended tire life and replace your tires based on that information.

RV Generator Maintenance

RV Generator MaintenanceRV Generators come in a variety of brands, are fueled by gasoline, diesel, or propane (LP), vary greatly in capacity, and may be air or water-cooled. Therefore, it is important to know exactly which generator and configuration you have in your RV. While it is as important as upkeep of the rest of your RV, generator maintenance is sometimes overlooked. Although troubleshooting and repair of a generator can get complicated, maintenance is not, and this generally results in fewer failures and longer life. Here, we will describe some simple generator maintenance tasks that most RVers can easily perform.

Get to Know Your RV Generator

  • Locate a parts distributor for your brand of generator and make note of the make and model so you can order filters and other parts from them.
  • Take note of the engine oil grade used and make sure to have a few quarts on board at all times.
  • I keep all my RV statistics recorded in an app on my phone so I can access it, even at the parts counter.
  • Remember that if you don’t have copies of your owner’s manual they are often available online from the manufacturers or third-party websites.

How Generators are Powered

Most generators will be fueled either by LP or the same fuel that powers the chassis (in the case of a motorhome). However, this is not always the case. I once had a diesel pusher that had a gas generator. Therefore, the RV had two fuel tanks. If the generator runs off the same fuel as the coach engine, it will draw fuel from the same tank. However, the generator will never run the coach out of fuel, since the generator dip tube going down into the fuel tank is shorter than the one used by the engine. In the case of an LP generator, there will be a separate large regulator (usually mounted with the generator) and fuel line than that used by the other appliances.diesel generator

Generator Oil Change

The most basic of generator maintenance tasks is to change the oil regularly. All generator types and sizes share similar requirements for oil changes, but refer to your owner’s manual for specific information.

  1. Locate and remove the oil drain plug, but be sure to place a drain pan underneath.
  2. Replace the oil filter, then refill the crankcase to the specified volume.
  3. Start the generator
  4. Check for leaks
  5. Turn off the generator, and top up the oil as necessary.
  6. Replace/clean the air and fuel filters, as well as the sparkplugs and ignition components at the specified intervals.
  7. For water-cooled units, check the coolant level and concentration.
  8. Make sure the generator unit is clean and free of debris, especially around the air intake and exhaust, as well as the radiator.
  9. Inspect the generator, including the exhaust components, electrical cables, and fuel systems, for damage and leaks.

Additional Precautions

Very little else has to be done to keep your generator running smoothly during regular operation, but there are some additional precautionary steps that may be required.

  • If your RV or generator is going to be unused for an extended period of time, such as during winter storage, be sure to pour some stabilizer into the fuel tank and run the generator for at least five minutes to ensure the stabilizer enters the generator fuel lines and system. This is not necessary if your generator is propane fueled.
  • Removing the spark plugs and pouring a few drops of oil into the cylinder before replacing the plugs can provide extra corrosion and rust protection.
  • Also, it is a good idea to have the 60Hz frequency verified periodically, as it can drift. This is especially important if your appliances or electronics exhibit erratic behavior. This is often manifested as flickering display screens or other miscreant electronics behavior. You can have this checked at a dealership or with a digital multi-meter that can measure frequency. This is an often-overlooked maintenance item that can damage electronics or appliance motors if left unchecked.
