The Florida RV Trade Association (FRVTA) Florida RV Supershow was held Jan 23-28, 2023 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa FL. It was estimated that over 79,000 people attended and I conducted a seminar each day of the show. It brought back memories as I also conducted seminars when I was working at Winnebago Industries over 25 years ago and WOW has it changed. Back then we were in a dusty old building with Lazy Days and the seminar was up in the grandstand seats!

This year we had a beautiful building with over 200 seats and it was air-conditioned! I had a modest crowd for the Tips For Choosing The Right RV on Wednesday and the crowd grew to over 200 Friday and Saturday. Sunday was back down to about 75 which makes it easier to ask more questions of the participants. And the attendees were there to buy, not only RVs but accessories as well. At times it was almost impossible to walk down the road and was impossible to get through the vendor buildings. But I did see a bunch of people walking out with generators, air conditioners, and almost every type of camping “must-have” from the vendors.

I went to the show last year and did a little research and this year we brought a production crew to interview RV manufacturers, equipment vendors, and many interesting product promotors.

Winnebago featured their Electric RV prototype the eRV2 built on a Ford Transit platform with an all-electric power train. We featured it in last month’s article. They also had their new National Park model Vista on display which comes in at 30’ so it’s easy to maneuver around the park and find a spot at the campgrounds.

The Solis is a smaller vehicle that we got a great walkaround from Nick, the Product Training Manager from the Southeast. It has a unique Overland Drawer feature that makes it easy to store and access gear, plug all terrain tires with standard Sumo Springs for a comfortable ride on rough roads.

Keep warm with the Truma Combi heating system and the 280 hp Dodge Ram platform can tow 3500 lbs. Stay dry camping longer with the two group 31 AGM batteries and 220-watt flexible solar panels mounted to the pop top.

Keystone RV introduced their new 5th Wheel with a front office floorplan!

The Montana was the hit of the show with a line of people coming in and out every day. With more people working from home, specifically taking their home on the road, this floorplan will be very popular as it has a dedicated office with a picture window. No more setting up on the dinette or bedroom fighting for space and quiet with others traveling with you.

One of the more interesting additions to the smaller model Class C and B Van market was the Wingamm built on a Fiat chassis.

This is an Italian company that has been in business since 1977 building a full fiberglass body they call monocoque design so it can not develop leaks. They have been building on various chassis platforms over the years such as Fiat, Mercedes, and Volkswagen, and with the new design Ducato chassis by Fiat has entered the US market with three models. It features a drop-down bed and compact design but there are only three distributors in the US. Still is kind of cool though.

Truma introduces AquaGo an instant hot water application with easy draining and cleaning. It has an exclusive decalcification system which extends the life of the unit especially since most of the water available at campsites is hard water. It provides a constant temperature and has an easy drain lever. New model installs can also get a recirculation kit for instant hot water throughout the coach.

Sumo Springs

For years, the standard chassis in Class A Gas and most Class C units have been a rock and roller coaster ride from the stock chassis. Sumo Springs is changing that and several manufacturers are offering standard on some models and optional on others. I have heard of these but have not gotten to do much testing but recently worked with one of the writers for RV Travel.com who had a terrible ride/drive on her F53 chassis and installed Sumo Springs and other enhancements. California RV Specialists has also installed quite a few of these and their customers love them. They are not rubber or metal, but rather made of a micro-cellular polyurethane poured into a mold to reduce rear-end sag, decrease vibration, and what we call porpoising or bouncing down the road. Pictured below is a set for a 2015 F53 which we are currently working on and will install a set this summer. Look for that article later.

What show review would be complete without including Lippert and their Lippert Scouts program. They had one entire end of the Vendor Building with their Lippert Scouts trailer, a stage for seminars from their Lippert Scout Ambassadors, and a campground setting with a ton of products. A new product that was being introduced was the wireless LP tank level gauge and the inside temperature gauge.

Both gauges have a sensor that mounts to the bottom of the tank in the LP product and hangs in the refrigerator for the temperature sensor and the One Control App on your phone provides the information on the LP level and the temperature.

Rust Inhibitor

For years I was a WD-40 man until I found the issues with it actually wiping off the lubricant that was designed for dump valve stems and hydraulic pistons. I came across a product called Fluid Film which is a great rust inhibitor and cleaner but it smells really bad!

At the show, I came across Bioshield T9 which many of our readers have been writing to us about. I got a sample and brought it back to try and have been very pleased with the lubricating performance. It will take a while to see how well it does with rust especially since it’s below zero most of the time currently! According to the website they have been working with Boeing for over 40 years to develop a more reliable metal protector and lubricant that could withstand prolonged environmental exposure. They claim it penetrates better, displaces moisture, and dissolves minor corrosion through the combination of unique waxes and solvents. Our readers have been very impressed with it as well.

As with all shows, there was a variety of attendees with the most unusual being Max the potbelly pig.

I think his fur baby buddy was thinking; “Do I smell bacon?”

Another feature was the abundance of strollers but it was a guessing game, baby or puppy?

Most of them were puppies, this one stopped at the Coach-Net tent to say how much he loved RVing!

And finally, we went “Live” from the Lippert Scout Trailer Thursday evening for the Talkin’ RV Tech event and had an hour of questions from not only our participants via the YouTube and Facebook channels but also from our Live audience outside the trailer at the Lippert Theater.

Kristen is the Director of Accounting here at Coach-Net and has been an invaluable member of the Coach-Net family for over 20 years now! She, her husband, and her two boys go on camping trips every year, but they have now been able to take Coach-Net’s Airstream out 3 times! Most recently, they went camping over Easter Weekend in Brownwood State Park! Check out their RV experience!

Where did you go?

We traveled to Brownwood State Park for a camping trip this past April.  This was a relaxing 3-hour drive out in west Texas. The state park was very nice, with some good hiking trails, biking areas, and a lake for fishing.

How long was your trip?

We camped for 3 nights over Easter weekend.  This is an annual event that we enjoy with 2 other families.  The kids look forward to the Easter Egg hunt Sunday morning.

Was this your 1st time RVing?

No, we have been able to go RVing about a handful of times now.  We have been camping for years and have recently switched from a tent to a camper.  My whole family really looks forward to each camping trip. It’s great to see my boys out exploring, throwing the football or frisbee, and playing with their friends instead of staring at their tablets.

What’s the fondest memory of your trip?

Watching all the kids go exploring.  We have 5 kids in our group of 3 families.  They gathered up the walkie-talkies and their backpacks for their explorations around the campground.  They were having so much fun together figuring out where to go and they drew up maps of their explorations when they got back to our campsites.  I love seeing all the kids disconnect from their screens and have fun outdoors.  We also enjoyed a family movie night under the stars this year.  We put up a movie screen and made some popcorn.  It was something new and fun for everyone!

Did you find anything challenging about your RV trip?

We have gotten pretty familiar with the RV by now.  We are able to get everything connected and set up pretty quickly.  This trip went very smoothly and we didn’t have any issues with the camper or campsite.

Would you go again? (& Why)

Definitely we will be going camping again.  We have a trip scheduled in Huntsville State Park in October.

Where would you like to go next?

We have a trip scheduled to go to Huntsville State Park.  Another one possibly in Pedernales State Park in November.  We go with the same group of family friends in the spring and fall every year.  We have been able to camp with this same group for over 10 years.  Now that a couple of us have campers, we plan to go more often than just 2 times per year.

Why do you love RVing?

RVing is such a great time.  We have been camping for years and our family really enjoys the outdoors and hanging out together.  Our boys (years 11 & 8) look forward to our RV trips weeks before we head out.  I would say the best part of RVing/camping are these special memories we are making as a family.

Camping in Bear Country

Camping In Bear Country

Heading to the mountains for your summer vacation? You’re not the only one. Bears regularly forage through campgrounds in search of food. And guess what? Bears even go after toiletries, lipstick, air fresheners, insect repellents, canned goods, trash, and baby wipes! In short, if it smells, bears want it.

When a bear is on the prowl and intent on getting the goods, he will use his mighty claws – and your car, tent, or motor home may be no match. As you can imagine, bears can cause a great deal of property damage in mere minutes. While cars, tents, and RVs can be repaired or replaced, the safety of your family and pets is of utmost concern.

In addition to property damage and safety issues, keeping bears out of your food is better for bears, too. Bears that regularly raid campsites become bolder and must be relocated or otherwise dealt with. Allowing bear access to your food could ultimately lead to its demise.

Bears Rummaging Through Food

The key to a successful camping trip in bear country is a good bear management strategy and proper food storage. Campgrounds where bears are a known problem generally provide bear-proof food lockers and have specific guidelines in place that all campers must follow. In fact, Title 36, Part 2.10 of the Code of Federal Regulations: Parks, Forests, and Public Property can regulate how food must be stored in national parks, forests, and public property. Proper food storage is the law!

While bear-proof lockers are available at certain campgrounds, there’s more to camping in bear country than stashing your food in these lockers. What if you’re backpacking? What if you want to go on a picnic or a hike? What if you’d like to have a few snacks inside the RV? Consider investing in bear canisters.

Bear canisters are designed to keep odors from escaping as well as to keep bears out. Most are “bear-resistant” and should keep all but the most persistent bears away from your stored food and toiletries. Canisters come in a variety of sizes with features for different uses. For example, some are designed for backpackers, complete with carrying cases and straps, while others are large enough to store a full ice chest.

Bear Canister

Before you purchase a bear canister, check with the park or forest service to ensure that the model you are interested in using has been approved for use. In addition, you may be able to rent a bear canister within the park. For example, at Yosemite, bear canisters are available for rent at most staffed wilderness permit stations within the park.

Use a bear-resistant liner as well as the canister. Liners help to further contain food, toiletries, and trash odors. Make sure to keep the container closed and locked at all times and store the canister at least 100 feet from your tent.

Another step to make your campsite less attractive to bears is keeping it clean. Do not hang your trash or toss beer cans in a bucket. All trash should be immediately placed in a bear-resistant receptacle. Even the sticks that you use to roast marshmallows should be disposed of properly as well as the water used to wash your dishes. The National Park Service recommends disposing of dishwater in toilets.

Bear Proof Trashcan

As you’re preparing for a camping trip in bear country, remember to thoroughly clean your car, motor home, or trailer. Vacuum the crumbs and throw out any trash that may be stashed. If you have children that use car seats and booster seats, clean these as well and plan on storing them outside of the car once you arrive at your destination. If you have a motor home, trailer, or camper, empty the cabinets of any items attractive to bears such as microwave popcorn, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, tobacco products, pet food, and other food and toiletry items. Store in bear canisters or in storage boxes that can easily fit in the provided food lockers at your campground.

While storing your food, toiletries, and trash in bear-resistant canisters or bear lockers is inconvenient, it’s a good bear-management strategy that allows you to have a safe and fun camping trip!

Coach-Net Camping: Beavers Bend State Park

Beavers Bend State Park

Joseph (Right) is one of our highly skilled Learning Program Managers. He will have been with Coach-Net for a total of 3 years this coming May and we couldn’t be happier to have him! Joseph has taken the Airstream camping to Beaver’s Bend State Park twice and has had a blast both times! He loves the outdoors, musical theatre, and honing his skills as a singer! Read on to find out how his RV trips have gone!

Where did you go?

For my camping trips, I took two different groups of friends up to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, and we went camping in the Beaver’s Bend State Park in Coach-Net’s Airstream Flying Cloud. Beaver’s Bend is such an incredibly beautiful park and the area is full of fun things to do. The first trip was back in May, and we took full advantage of the numerous swimming opportunities. Our favorite spot was the spillway from the dam in the southern part of the park, but even though it was so warm and sunny, the water coming from the bottom of the lake above the dam was FREEZING! The second trip was in October, so swimming was definitely not an option, but we spent a large part of our day hiking and exploring along that same spillway, following the river.

Spillway

How long was your trip?

Both of our trips were about two days, getting to Broken Bow on Friday evening, and coming back to Denton/DFW on Sunday evening. We got to the park as it was getting dark, would set up for the weekend and head back to town for the last of our food supplies before making dinner, and then spent most of Saturday out swimming or exploring. The Sundays were a nice relaxing day where we slept in, ate some food before packing and cleaning up, and started the trek back home.

Was this your 1st time RVing?

My first time RVing was actually only about a week before the May trip. My mom and stepdad rented a travel trailer that we took out to Inks lake, west of Austin, TX, for about 4-5 days. Inks Lake State Park was a frequent camping spot for my parents when they were growing up, so it was cool for us to return to and have a relaxing few days in the outdoors. The May trip to Broken Bow was the first RVing trip though where I was the one towing the RV and showing my friends the ropes of RVing.

What’s the fondest memory of your trip?

RV DriveFor both of my trips, the majority of my friends had never been camping or used an RV before, so it was really great getting to show them how much fun RVing could be. For the May trip, I think one of my fondest memories was actually the time spent driving out to Broken Bow. We all act in musical theatre and we spent a lot of the drive singing and listening to different shows. During our second trip, we took a lot of videos and pictures, and my friend, Nolan, made a video commemorating the trip that was so funny and is a lot fun to look back on.

Did you find anything challenging about your RV trip?

Coach-Net AirstreamSurprisingly, there weren’t many challenges on our trips, even though I was the only one that knew much about RVs, and it was my first time taking one out myself. I am one of the trainers here at our call center and used to be an agent on our previous RV Core Team, so it was really cool to see the conceptual knowledge I have learned and taught over the years get put to use as we figured out things along the way. I will say that probably the most challenging part was setting up the first night on our May trip. It was already really dark and I hadn’t been to Beaver’s Bend before, so we didn’t know how to reserve and pay for a spot, and getting set up for the first time when it was so dark outside wasn’t easy.

Would you go again?

I know I will absolutely go out again. Working for a company that gives us the resource of using our Airstream anytime, and knowing it’s free to use, is so cool and such a blessing! All of my friends that have gone so far have talked about going out again, and there are even more that I want to go with.

Getting Ready In The Airstream

Where would you like to go next?

There are a few other parks I would like to go to, but they are a bit farther away. I think Beaver’s Bend is definitely going to be my usual spot, and likely where I will be going next time. It really is such a beautiful park!

Why do you love RVing?

I love RVing because it is such a fun escape. Growing up, we used to go tent camping all the time, between Cub and Boy Scouts, and just family trips, so going camping has always been a love of mine. RVing gives you that chance to still experience the outdoors and see such beautiful places, but without the risk of bad weather just ruining your trip and the chance to actually get some sleep in a bed. RVing is also a chance for me to bring my friends out on camping trips that would never want to go tent camping.

Robert S. ~ “The service from Coach-Net is outstanding, based on what I have seen so far I can’t imagine being unhappy with the service. I have used Coach-Net 2 times in 4 years and I was impressed both times. I recommend your company every chance I get online or in-person because it’s that good. It’s not very often I will put my name behind a companies service. In my humble opinion, most companies provide lip service to cover up for their poor service that they don’t want to admit to, Coach-Net is the real deal you truly get quality service. NICE JOB Coach-Net.”

Coach-Net, Coach-Net Camping, Coach-Net RV, Coach-Net RVing, RV Camping, What Makes Coach-Net Different?

Coach-Net Girls RV TripWay back in 1987, Coach-Net was created for RVers by RVers. Many years and even decades have passed, resulting in so much change.  RVs have progressed in size and with countless electronic updates. And the widespread use of the internet has not only made our trip planning infinitely easier, it has allowed our exploration of the outdoors to be so much more accessible.  And with the passing of time, even Coach-Net has changed, continually updating our methods and tools to better serve our members. But while many things have changed, there is one thing that has always stayed the same. We are RVers!  The only way to truly understand the intimidation a new RVer has when driving their RV, or setting up in a campground for the very first time is by experiencing that moment ourselves.  For this reason, Coach-Net proudly owns not just one, but two RVs – a motorized and a towable unit both available for our employees to go camping with family and friends, at no cost. We want every person working for Coach-Net to have that personal camping experience and we want to be able to share our experiences with you.

In November 2019, 6 Coach-Net women from all departments including Sales, Accounting and Marketing embarked on a camping adventure together where they camped in Coach-Net’s motorized and towable units.  Here’s more about their trip:

Q:  Where did you go?

A:  We camped at the beautiful Vineyards Campground & Cabins in Grapevine, TX.  Our rigs were parked right off the shores of Grapevine Lake where there were plenty of opportunities to hike, run, bike and fish.

Coach-Net Airstream

Q:  How long was your trip?

A:  We were only there for a weekend, but could have definitely stayed longer.  It was the perfect weekend getaway.

Q:  Was this your first time RVing?

A:  There were 3 of us who had RV’d before and 3 of us were newbies. Us newbies were very excited to have our RVing vets with us, as there is much to know about setting up and breaking down camp.  And, if we needed anything, we took comfort in knowing that our Coach-Net RV Techs were just a phone call away.  For the 3 of us that were inexperienced, having access to our Coach-Net RV techs allowed us to have a truly carefree RVing experience.

Coach-Net Ladies

Q:  What’s your fondest memory from your trip?

A:  The nightly campfires!  It was so much fun sitting around the campfire, enjoying the beauty of the flickering flames and soaking up the sounds of the crackling wood.  It was a wonderful way to see our coworkers in a different light and get to know each other on a deeper level. We made s’mores, told all sorts of entertaining stories, and shared lots of laughs.  Spending time with friends and family around a warm campfire creates a connection like no other.

Campfire

Q:  Did you find anything challenging about your RV trip?

A:  Driving RVs, whether towing one or maneuvering a Class A, can always be intimidating and sometimes challenging.  For our group, that was by far the most daunting part of RVing – especially for the 3 rookies.  Luckily, RV Driving School is available to help teach the skills needed in all different traffic conditions.

Q:  Would you go again?

A:  Most definitely!  A few of us have already reserved the company RV for trips in the spring and can’t wait!

Q:  Why do you love RVing?

A:  It gives a way to escape, even for just a short amount of time.  Camping means time outdoors which is always a huge stress reliever and a mood booster.  We don’t take enough time to just enjoy the simpler things in life, like sipping hot coffee on a cool fall morning while watching a gorgeous sunrise or just simply smiling and waving at the strangers in the campsite next to you.  This is all made possible through RVing.

What does our roadside cover? What do we consider qualified? (Technical Support and Towing are big questions)

  • Coach-Net provides unlimited towing, jumpstart, fuel delivery, locksmith, tire assistance, winching, and technical support. We tow unlimited mileage, no cost to you, to the nearest qualified repair facility.
  • Coach-Net takes the term “Qualified” very seriously. This means our technicians will verify the needed service based on the unit’s specific issue and who is certified to handle the problem.

How do we handle our tire services?

  • Coach-Net offers unlimited tire assistance and delivery to the member’s location in addition to covering the service call/mileage to send a technician for repair. The member is responsible for any parts and labor incurred.
  • If the member has a good working spare there is no fee to change the tire. If the member is disabled in an unsafe location where a tire cannot feasibly be serviced, Coach-Net will either provide a tow to the nearest qualified tire facility OR dispatch police to the member’s location for immediate assistance.

What areas does Coach-Net cover? Does Coach-Net assist in campgrounds?

  • Because breakdowns can happen anywhere at any time, Coach-Net provides assistance throughout the entire United States and Canada whether a member is on the side of the road, campground, or in their own driveway.

What discounts do we offer?

  • We offer a wide variety of discounts including campgrounds, hotel/motels, vehicle rentals, tires (Michelin/Goodyear), online shopping, etc.

What Makes Coach-Net Different

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel

In a modern society that compels everyone to be the same, that classic quote from Coco Chanel causes pause. Everyone is encouraged to dress the same, act the same, talk the same, and everyone should have the same cookie-cutter lifestyle. But anyone who RVs knows that if you choose to be ordinary, like everyone else, you can deprive yourself from something extraordinary. While having a traditional brick and mortar house can be beautiful, it will never give you the freedom and thrill of living full time on the road in an RV. The unique sense of adventure you get from living in an RV is simply irreplaceable. And there are all sorts of unique qualities that can make a person, or a business, irreplaceable.

There are almost countless roadside assistance companies to choose from. It seems that each day a new company is popping up or branching out to offer roadside assistance. So how do you choose? Who should you rely on when you need help? On paper, an uncritical eye could easily have similar sentiments about roadside assistance companies. “They’re all the same. They all provide roadside assistance.” So why do so many RVers choose Coach-Net as the people they call when they need help? What makes Coach-Net different? Are all roadside assistance companies equal, or is there something about Coach-Net that sets us apart from the rest? What makes Coach-Net irreplaceable? The answer is deeply rooted, but it can probably be summarized with just one word: culture.

Maya Angelou Quote

Words Coach-Net Employees Live By

It all started around a campfire. Over 30 years ago a group of RVers were sitting around the campfire swapping horror stories of being broken down on the side of the road, collectively chewing on their past aggravations, and the relentless run of issues RVers regularly face. Certain people knew of quality technicians in specific areas. Others had lesser-known tricks for troubleshooting difficult components. With their combined knowledge an idea was born. “Wouldn’t it be great if there was someone we could call for all of these issues who could help us in the moment? Rather than hear about the great technician, or learn of the helpful trick, long after we resolved our troubles, wouldn’t it be great to talk to a live person who could help us find the answers right then and there?”

Employees Around Campfire

Coach-Net Employees Around Campfire

That group wanted a network helping them when they were out traveling in their motorcoaches so that’s what they became. It was around that campfire that Coach-Net was created, and we have been proudly serving as a lifeline for RVers ever since. We didn’t just create a business overnight. Arguably being the first of its kind to offer high-end service for RVers, we have spent decades building and developing our program. We didn’t just see a successful business model and copy it simply for monetary gain. Coach-Net was created for RVers by RVers because they saw a need that wasn’t being met. RVers needed a resource that could provide immediate help. Over the past 30 years, everyone at Coach-Net has toiled to establish us as the go-to RV experts for travelers in need.

At Coach-Net, we pride ourselves on being RV experts; a passion that is easily evident in all that we do. Anyone who steps foot in our office is immediately immersed in the RV lifestyle. Our reception area greets visitors with our oversized Coach-Net sign perched above a giant silhouette of an RV camping scene. As you venture further, you’ll see one of our main walls prominently displaying our mission statement and core values as a testament to any visitors, and as a constant reminder to our team. We even have smaller magnetic versions hanging in each person’s workspace so that we never lose sight of our ultimate purpose.

Coach-Net Mission Statement

We’re proud of what we do and we’re proud to work in such a fun industry. While most roadside assistance companies will outsource or subcontract to various call centers, at Coach-Net we take pride in our services; consequently, we insist on always doing our own work and keeping everything under one roof. Everyone at Coach-Net offices in the same open floor, allowing us to seamlessly serve our partners and our members. Having our agents, technicians, operations specialists, learning & development team, marketing, member services, and sales team all work in the same open space is also an ever-present reminder that each person within Coach-Net is integral to the system. No role is necessarily greater than another. We each contribute something unique and vital to fulfilling our mission: to create a carefree RV experience so everyone can focus on making memories with their friends and families.

Finally, one of the things that makes Coach-Net truly authentic is the fact that we are RVers. Anyone can look at beautiful pictures, and read countless instructional manuals, but nothing can ever replace the feeling of driving a big Class A RV down a curving mountain roadway. The only way to truly understand the intimidation a new RVer has when setting up in a campground for the very first time is by experiencing that moment ourselves. And everyone should get to enjoy the warmth of a flickering campfire soothingly massage all of your senses while you watch your family climb into the cozy RV for a well-earned night of rest.

For this reason, Coach-Net proudly owns not just one, but two RVs – a motorized and a towable unit both available for our employees to go camping with family and friends, at no cost. We want every person working for Coach-Net to have that personal camping experience. It makes us more knowledgeable in our jobs and it inherently makes us more compassionate to our members’ struggles. After we have spent time in an RV dealing with the daily challenges they naturally produce, we realize that could easily be our own family calling in for assistance.

Coach-Net RV Tech Out Camping

RVing is about enjoying one-of-a-kind experiences in some of the most unique places. RVers seek to create irreplaceable memories through personalized travels. So it only makes sense that when RVers inevitably encounter a moment where they need help, they should call someone who is invested in their passion and understanding of their unique needs. When you call Coach-Net needing help, you’re not just a random number struggling with some foreign issue. The person answering the phone has personal experience camping. They have explored the inside and outside of an RV, and consequently have a level of compassion that someone who has never RVed simply can’t replicate. There will always be other companies that offer roadside assistance. There will always be other companies that may even appear similar on paper. But at our core, Coach-Net is truly different. Our unique culture permeates everything we do. And our passion for RVing, and helping fellow RVers, is unparalleled and irreplaceable.

Tips For RVing To National Parks

Beginning Tips, Coach-Net, National Park, National Park Advice, RV, RV Life, RV Tips, Tips for RVing In National Parks

Tips for RVing To National ParkWhat’s the most appealing thing about RVing?  For many people, it’s the opportunity to visit some of America’s most precious treasures – our National Parks – in style and comfort. And for many of us, planning the trip is half the fun of the RV lifestyle.

Here are 10 tips you may want to use to make that RV trip of a lifetime even more enjoyable:

  1. Information, data, reservation services and trip-planning tours at National Parks and other federal lands are available on recreation.gov, an interagency partnership website for federal agencies. When planning a trip, it’s important to go here first to identify the particular schedules and information about your future destination.
  2. It’s difficult to get RV sites at the more popular National Parks, and reservations are necessary. Campgrounds throughout the Park Service can set their own reservation schedules and rules, but many are subject to a ”rolling booking window”, which allows you to book a reservation for a specified amount of time – typically, within six or twelve months in advance of your arrival date. During summer months, RV reservations at Parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite or Grand Canyon typically fill up the first day of the window, often within minutes of its opening (10 am, Eastern time, 7 am Pacific). Early birds do well here.
  3. The recreation.gov website is not actually owned and operated by the federal government – it’s run by private companies who enter into exclusive contracts with the feds. In the fall of 2018, a new 10-year contract was awarded to Booz Allen Hamilton, a giant software company which agreed to modernize the site, including providing real-time updates – in other words, if a campsite is canceled, it will reappear as available on the website.  Unfortunately, the company had to basically rebuild recreation.gov from scratch and naturally, there are still some glitches.  Recently, Booz Allen agreed to release data on federal land camping to other private reservation services, and companies like Hipcamp.com now offer reservations at a limited number of popular National Parks like Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and more.
  4. Back to the camping experience…larger National Parks generally offer RV sites with hookups, although many have just electric and water. If you’re a boondocker or not afraid to try dry camping for a few days, you’ll find that you have many more options to dry camp within the Parks. Just be sure to check for vehicle size limits – many of these campgrounds cannot accommodate larger rigs.
  5. Likewise, if your schedule is flexible, look at optional dates. It’s easy to do on the website, and avoiding holidays can sometimes open up many more opportunities.
  6. If you’re going to be traveling into more than one National Park or visiting one Park multiple times, it will probably pay to buy a multi-day or annual America the Beautiful entrance pass. If you’re a senior, the lifetime pass is $80, or $20 annually.  If you haven’t reached those golden years, it’s $80 year.  Active military is free.  The America the Beautiful pass is an annual pass which covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges as well as standard amenity fees (day use fees) at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A pass covers entrance, standard amenity fees and day-use fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person). Children age 15 or under are admitted free.
  7. It’s not just the campsites which have limited space. The infamous tunnel at Zion National Park, which opened in 1930, cannot accommodate today’s large vehicles and the Park’s rangers control one-way traffic flow – you will wait at each end for the ranger to allow you to enter, and then drive down the center of the tunnel.  We planned accordingly and only took our tow vehicle through the tunnel, although we did see some small motorhomes and trailers on the road. Vehicles 13 feet or higher cannot pass through the tunnel, and length restrictions throughout Zion are 40 feet for a single vehicle and 50 feet for any vehicle combination. Just outside of South Dakota’s Badlands National Park on the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway there are six tunnels, many tight hairpin curves and spiraling “pigtail” bridges. Fortunately, we left the fifth wheel in our campground on this trip and found the tunnels were so tight we had to pull in the rearview mirrors on our truck in order to navigate through. Definitely not the road for large rigs!
  8. If you can’t get reservations for that perfect pristine campsite in the midst of a beautiful National Park, don’t despair. We’ve found that most Parks are surrounded by private campgrounds, and many of them are wonderful. We don’t usually plan six months ahead, and when we visited Yellowstone, we had no hope of finding a campsite within the Park. Instead, we camped for several days just outside the North entrance, then moved to the West entrance and stayed in West Yellowstone.  We went into the Park every day and were able to return home to swim in the campground pool taking advantage of the amenities each evening.
  9. Likewise, on a camping trip to the Grand Canyon, we were able to get a last-minute campsite at the South Rim’s Trailer Village. (It was also in March.)  We spent a couple of enjoyable nights there during the week, and then moved to a park a few miles outside the main gate and continued to enjoy the Grand Canyon experience.
  10. After all the planning, it’s time to have fun! There’s no better place to experience the diverse and brilliant beauty of our land than at one of our National Parks.  Opportunities are bountiful — whether it’s hiking in a forest, walking along a beach, fishing in a crystal-clear river or just relaxing in the great outdoors, these natural treasures bring us amazing experiences along with true peace and happiness.

Finally, the real beauty of visiting our National Parks in our RVs is that we have the flexibility to take advantage of options as we plan our trips.  A little advance planning makes it all so much easier, but if we want to make a left hand turn instead of going right, we can do so. After all, our homes are on wheels.

6 Reasons To Camp In State Parks This Summer

State Park Camping

It’s that time of year. People are pulling their RVs out of storage, cleaning them up, and getting ready to head out on their summer camping adventures. As an RVer, you are very likely among these excited folks, and you may be wondering what this year’s adventures will hold for you.

Our recommendation? Check out some state parks!

All too often, state parks are overlooked. Many people simply assume that private RV parks are the best/only option, while others skip over the state parks in search of the grandeur offered by national parks. This is unfortunate because it means some wonderful gems are being passed over.

Why not change up your plans this year and hit up some state parks during your travels? You never know what amazing new discoveries you may come across. If that isn’t enough to convince you, you may also want to consider the six points below.

State Park

#1: Low Rates

Camping might be one of the cheapest ways to travel and see the world, but that doesn’t mean camping fees don’t start to add up. State park camping fees tend to be much lower than the fees at private parks or even those at national parks. Obviously, this is a major bonus if you camp often.

#2: Surprising Amenities

You may not expect it, but many state parks actually have some pretty awesome amenities. A huge number of them have electric and/or water hookups, and many even have sewer hookups. Those that don’t have sewer at each site tend to at least have a dump station, and almost every state park with a campground has bathhouses for campers.

Besides those basic things, you’ll also find things like playgrounds, grills, fire pits, and more. We’ve even found laundry rooms at some, and at one particular location—in New Orleans—the laundry machines were free!

#3: Escape into Nature

Teenager In Cave

Generally speaking, private RV parks don’t offer much in the way of an escape into nature. National parks do, but they have their own set of issues such as lack of hookups and tiny sites. State parks offer the best of both worlds, giving campers a chance to escape into a natural environment without giving up certain comforts.

#4: Big Rigs Usually Welcome

As mentioned above, most national parks don’t have room for larger RVs. State parks will almost always welcome larger rigs into their campgrounds, meaning you can have low rates and a beautiful natural environment without downsizing your RV.

#5: Recreation Opportunities Onsite

In addition to the surprising amenities offered by so many state parks, each park also offers a variety of recreation opportunities, making these parks true attractions in and of themselves. Whether you prefer kayaking, hiking, or fishing, you’re sure to find a number of state parks that offer opportunities for your favorite outdoor activities.

On top of that, many state parks also offer ranger-led activities and even Junior Ranger programs for visiting children.

#6: Countless Choices

One of the greatest things about making state parks your camping location of choice is the fact that, depending on how far you’re willing to travel, you could easily camp every single weekend of the year and never visit the same park twice. There are so many state parks in this amazing country of ours, and each one is so unique that even just exploring the parks alone would keep you happily busy for quite some time.

Alpha Unlock Pro's

Not all heroes wear capes. While the heroes you see in Hollywood movies can be entertaining and often idolized by small children, the real heroes rarely wear flashy clothes. In the field of roadside assistance, the mark of a real hero is his unyielding dedication to the people he helps and his really big tow truck. Coach-Net members regularly approach us in person, post their gratitude online, call our member services to express their appreciation, or even send in hand written letters to boast about the wonderful Coach-Net agent who patiently and happily helped them on the phone when they were in desperate need. But many people don’t fully see the team of people who work together seamlessly to ensure our members are provided for. One of the major pillars of our Coach-Net team is comprised of our independent service providers. We partner with thousands of service providers all throughout the US and Canada and while we provide for our members over the phone, we rely on our partners to provide for our members in person. One of our dedicated partners who we trust to take care of our members with the utmost care is Alpha Unlock Pros.

Network

Based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Alpha Unlock Pros prides themselves on the top rated service they consistently deliver. Founded only 3 years ago, Alpha Unlock Pros has already received the Towman Ace Award two years in a row. The Towman Ace Award recognizes only the top 1% of service providers in the industry who consistently deliver the best service. Alpha Unlock Pros’ founder and owner, Adrian Lewis says receiving this esteemed award is “such and honor and speaks to how my company is dedicated to providing great service for our customers.” Afterall, that’s why Adrian created the company in the first place. “I saw a need for a company that had a genuine interest in helping stranded motorists. We also wanted to charge fair prices in a market that is often drastically overpriced.” While most people starting a new business are almost solely driven by maximizing their profit, Adrian’s primary focus was “fair” pricing and quality of service. It’s that kind of commitment to integrity why Coach-Net trusts Adrian and his team to help our members.

Alpha Unlock Pro's

Alpha Unlock Pros character and commitment to serving others is the foundation of their company and they work to demonstrate it in all that they do. Their mission statement is a testament of their devotion to selflessness and service. “Alpha Unlock Pros seeks to honor God by sowing seeds of faith by having a positive impact on those we come in contact with.” While most companies would promote the services they provide in their mission statement, Alpha Unlock Pros sets themselves apart from everyone else; they simply seek to honor their faith by serving others. That’s why we choose to partner with Alpha Unlock Pros; that’s why we trust them to provide the high-end level of service our members expect. They are dedicated to doing what’s right in all situations, and we work hard to reciprocate that same effort so that we can in turn earn their trust. And Adrian says that’s what he values most about our relationship. “Since the beginning of our working relationship, Coach-Net has always been dedicated to resolving any issues that may arise now matter how small the issue might be. Such commitment to great customer service on ALL levels is acknowledged and appreciated.”

Whether you’re locked out of your car, you’ve suffered a flat tire on your trailer, or your Class A diesel pusher is broken down on the side of the road, we work as a team with companies like Alpha Unlock Pros to handle whatever challenge you may encounter. We work together to ensure that you are safe, and you receive the help you need. So if you find yourself in need of roadside assistance: don’t panic, just call Coach-Net. With dedicated partners like Alpha Unlock Pros working with us 24/7, you can trust that our team will always come to your rescue. Thank you, Adrian, for choosing to partner with Coach-Net. Thank you, Alpha Unlock Pros for making sure Coach-Net members can truly enjoy Carefree RVing.
